I am a non-traditional student who began my college matriculation 15 years after receiving my high school diploma. When I was graduating from high school, I was afraid of becoming an adult. I had lived a sheltered life compared to my peers growing up on a dairy farm. Instead of pursuing a college education, I got married and started a family. I was fortunate to be a stay-at-home mother during that 15 year gap in formal education. This allowed me to mature comfortably into a role of an adult with a secure personal identity. I have experienced symptoms of depression and anxiety since I was a teenager. I refused to seek any form of treatment since I refused to believe it was a problem. In June of 2005 I finally sought treatment for my depression. I was given medication by my family doctor; the medication afforded me the ability to change my attitude. I was no longer suffering from constant anxiety and was able to appreciate how my rumination upon …show more content…
I plan on working in the psychology field either part-time or full-time while being a part-time student. I have been a full-time student in my four years of college while holding a 15 hour job and taking care of my house and family. I know that this will be a tough undertaking, but I am willing to continue with this endeavor. I want to obtain the skills that will allow me to become a licensed therapist as well as a better assistant for my client’s needs. My family is the driving force behind my success. If I had started down this path when I had completed high school, I would have inevitably failed to achieve a college degree. Being a non-traditional student has afforded me the opportunity to come into my college education with the maturity necessary for my degree. I am confident that with the continued support of my family and my strength of my identity, I will be able to complete a graduate

I found a safe place in Fraternity and Sorority Life I found mentors and I figured out who I wanted to become. In the Fall of 2012 it would have been impossible for myself or my family to know how much college and sorority life would shape who I am today.…

If I could go back to the past and talk to myself in September 2013, I would tell my younger self to be prepared for the next four years. I would advise myself to plan out my work and actually do assignments ahead of time instead of putting them off until nine o'clock the night before they were due. I would tell myself to not take honors trig because it was too much to handle combined with all of my other classes, as well as saying, that just because it was recommended to take a class, it doesn't mean I should've. I would recommend actually trying to do the workouts for field hockey before preseason. That way it wouldn't be so bad in the future.…

To start with, I need to maintain my grades, I’ve had a 4.0 grade point average since middle school and in order to get into a good college I need to maintain that. In addition, I also need to keep up with my extracurricular activities; by joining clubs, volunteering, and doing other activities outside of school, I’m able to create a solid resume for myself. As a person who is going to be a first generation college student, my journey towards obtaining a higher education has been challenging to say the least. Neither my father or mother finished high school, but when I was very young, my mother, who struggled with alcoholism, left my father and I, and he has raised me by himself ever since. Over the course of my childhood, my father did everything in his power to make ends meet through working long hours and multiple jobs so that I could have the opportunities that he never had. Because of this, at an early age I learned to do without certain things and when I was old enough, I got a job of my own to help provide for myself and my father. As a result of these things, sometimes it was difficult to do well in school and other activities, but I always found a way to succeed through diligence and time management skills.…

From the moment that I began freshman year in high school, it was emphasized to me that college had to be part of my academic life. Both of my parents attended college, my father has a Ph.D. in Theology and my mother has a Bachelor of Arts in Accounting.
