Student Performance Based Assessment Essay

Introduction Pre-assessments, diagnostic assessments, formative assessments, and summative assessments all have their own place in the classroom. They provide teachers with data that informs curriculums, instruction and ultimately additional assessment. The many assessments that teachers use to guide their practices are assessed using a variety of methods. When giving students a performance based assessment, the appropriate grading style is a rubric. Arter and McTighe (2001) suggest “the best rubrics are worded in a way that covers the essence of what we, as teachers, look for when we’re judging quality and they reflect the best thinking in the field as to what constitutes good performance”. Government. The English learning goals is based on a standard that asks student to write persuasively to convince an audience by using persuasive techniques (Texas Education Agency, 2010). In student friendly terms, students will be able to write to persuade a specific audience by using rhetorical appeals and evidence by the end of the unit. This performance task does not require students to complete their learning in the traditional way of writing an essay. Rubrics have several uses, but most importantly the help students make the best decisions regarding their work Students will be able to use the rubric as a guide for what they should create and produce the best work possible. When students have a model and rubric by which to format their work, students are better able to see the product they are creating (Laureate Education, Inc., 2010). As a result students can take a more active role in their learning, and will be able to analyze and evaluate their work to determine if what they create is exemplar. With an effective rubric, students will be able to perform at their
