It has all got to do with perception.
Oxford dictionary definition of perception: The way in which something is regarded, understood, or interpreted.
Perception plays a big role in design. When you look at JHB it can be said that it is highly densified leading to unpleasant spaces and movement is very limited, on the other hand JHB can be seen as a rich city with many cultures and historical value and the densification enforces that idea.
This is where the designer can use perception wisely by getting different opinions and to not be blinded by the perception of his/her thoughts. The two sites that I decided to use are the Shield’s Library Courtyard and the Memorial Union Quadrangle. The reason I chose the library’s courtyard is that I always like to go and spend time there, I feel focused when I am there. It’s quiet, relaxing and peaceful. In comparison to the quad I go there to socialize and think out loud, but I cannot feel that I am focused because I feel that there is always a large number of people occupying it at the same time so it feels more crowed. I chose both locations to show how they can be, similar in ways but at the same time they could be very different.…

This being the interior space within these boundaries, the interior of the building says a lot more than its exterior, as it defines the space, the light and the mood it creates.…

I never intended to study architecture. When I was applying to colleges, I intended to study kinesiology and psychology. Studying dance and photography when I was younger gave me a desire to be expressive, and even though I felt a connection to the physicality of dance through kinesiology, I knew I wanted to do something that fulfilled that same sense of expression. It wasn’t until I studied architecture that I noticed some of its similarities with dance. Dance is expressive of the body, but it is also an observation of people’s interaction with each other and with their surroundings, a study of people’s movement through space.…
