It has all got to do with perception.
Oxford dictionary definition of perception: The way in which something is regarded, understood, or interpreted.
Perception plays a big role in design. When you look at JHB it can be said that it is highly densified leading to unpleasant spaces and movement is very limited, on the other hand JHB can be seen as a rich city with many cultures and historical value and the densification enforces that idea.
This is where the designer can use perception wisely by getting different opinions and to not be blinded by the perception of his/her thoughts. North Beacon Hill (N.B.H) as all its elements and ideas hugging one central route. This was done because the community members felt there was a need to unite all their resources instead of following a government issue SDP.

In N.B.H all the hierarchies are on one access route and all the energies of experiences are now amplified by the method of densification.
JHB and N.B.H are completely different realities. This is because one has the city to idea approach and the other the idea to city approach respectively.
To understand this is to understand the way in which the building of each place comes to being. JHB has a significant influence on how buildings should look and behave; this is because of its strong political history, culture richness and density. This is how the city creates the ideas in the architects mind.
N.B.H although also rich in culture it is not as densified and politically orientated as JHB. This means that N.B.H has more freedom from the community to decide o specific things like structure and forms. This is how the idea is then imposed to the
