In this role, it is my job to no longer be in the classroom-working daily with students, but now to lead a group of diverse individuals from all across the country. In their first year as Corps Members I coach members weekly in planning and implementing individualized small group academic interventions for 72 middle school students in Literacy and Math. I plan and facilitate weekly activities for members to improve competencies of communication, team leadership, execution to results and relationship development. I also facilitate monthly reflective service leadership development curriculum. During my first few months as a Senior AmeriCorps Member, tragedy struck in Baton Rouge, the death of Alton Sterling. I saw kids yet again give up on education because our system was teaching them that they couldn’t be who they aspire to be. In this instance, I once again had the same thought about this city. The kids that I serve still need me, but on a different level. As an educated African American woman, there are certain areas that I wish to help bring awareness to as a vital member of a campus community. One area would be enhancing the college experience of African-Americans in a way that proves to be beneficial for the careers they choose to be a part of and helping them to feel capable of doing the work that they are meant to do. A second area would be the ability to help in processes that improve the recruitment and retention rates among high school students and understanding it is a major part of a college process. However, as the people going into Higher Education it is our job to make sure they are graduating and able to prosper. Lastly, having the capability to be an advocate for National Service organizations to enhance the skills of young people. Allowing people to see that National Service is an experience that has the opportunity to let young people see the world through a different lens, but realizing that this is a lens that they shouldn’t take off after a year or two, but keep this lens on when they go back to undergrad or go to graduate school to serve and enhance the communities they were apart
