The opportunities in medicine go beyond the bedside or the laboratory. Being born and raised in an underserved village, I have been inspired to be a determined advocate for social justice and elimination of healthcare disparities. My passion for healthcare reform and addressing needs of the underserved originated through my participation in underserved free healthcare clinics held throughout Detroit. Participating in such events not only exposed me to the existing racial, socioeconomic, and cultural healthcare disparities, but also taught me the value of a team-based approach to meet the healthcare needs of patients. These clinical experiences enhanced my medical education by providing me a greater understanding into healthcare disparities and management on a global and domestic level.
The line between medical and surgical management to improve patient’s lives combined with opportunities to impact medical disparities are at the heart of what prompts me to pursue such a dynamic field.
