New staff can familiarize themselves with the centre’s philosophy, curriculum, policies and expectations of themselves. Supervisors can also benefit through the orientation as they can observe interpersonal skills exhibited by the new staff (Carver, 2003). This can be seen through icebreakers, sharing sessions and meetings where the new teacher will have to interact with her colleagues. This can also be a platform where queries can be addressed to aid new teachers in understanding the centre better. Having an orientation programme will provide the new teacher with chances to reflect on the teaching practices adopted in the centre. When new teachers are acquainted with expectations and practices in the centre, they will be better equipped to start their teaching journey and know that they have a group of supportive teachers to help them out (Lunenberg, 2011). Mentor buddy will be in the classroom observing the new teacher interact and conduct activity with the children. New teacher is given the opportunity to observe and be involved in routine care to gain a better understanding of the centre’s daily routine.
Workshop on classroom management is held on this day because classroom management is one of the few areas in which new teachers face challenges in and this can help the new teacher gain confidence when handling a class since she will then be more well-prepared.
Debrief will be for the new teacher to reflect on what was covered during the workshop and her observations throughout the time spent with her assigned class. The new teacher can also address her concerns about her assigned class. Orientation – Day 3
