Oral health is an important factor of living a long healthy life. While there are many aspects or dental care, proper nutrition plays a key role in keeping the gums and teeth healthy. Many people are unaware of the importance of oral health that is associated with proper nutrition. The different foods and nutrients people ingest can have both good and bad effects on their teeth. Proper nutrition will lead to strong healthy teeth, as for malnutrition can cause many negative effects like inflammation to the gums, tooth decay, and eventually the loss of teeth.
Proper nutrition is achieved by obtaining balanced and combined amount of minerals, vitamins, proteins, and healthy carbohydrates. Minerals play a key role in dental nutrition. Calcium and

Vitamins like Vitamin A, Vitamin C, and Vitamin B complex help promote healthy gums by providing immune support, aid in the formation of epithelial cells, and promote wound healing. Vitamin D is another essential vitamin that helps the body absorb important minerals like calcium and phosphorous. Vitamin D also helps support the alveolar bone structure, and helps build skeletal bones and teeth. Many of these vitamins can be found in your everyday fruits and vegetables. Fruits like strawberries, oranges, and other citrus fruits are a good source of vitamin C. Yellow vegetables, dry beans, and green vegetables will provide a good source of vitamins A and B. Vitamin D is mainly obtained by drinking milk and getting plenty of sunshine. Obesity can lead to diabetes and other health conditions, which can compromise your immune system. A compromised immune system will not let your body adequately fight of infections in the mouth and body. People with a compromised immune system have a higher risk of having periodontal disease. Being overweight can also increase adipose, or fatty tissue. Adipose tissue can cause lipomas (fatty growths) on the gums, and cheeks. It can also be associated with the inflammatory response to the mucous membranes in the mouth.
