Personal Narrative: My Trip To West Warwick High School

As a future educator, I was asked to observe classrooms that consisted of different ages and stages of learning. Since John F. Deering Middle School and West Warwick High School are connecting school, I decided to set up my observations there. Quite honestly, it was a great feeling to go back to where I attended school and view the new ways that children are learning today. On February 28th, I visited an eighth grade Social Studies class at Deering Middle School. One of the things that I immediately noticed in the class was how students were completely engaged as they completed their work on their Chromebooks. On my visit to West Warwick High School on March 2nd, I observed students, ranging from sophomores to seniors, in a Sports and Marketing class. In addition to seeing distractions in this class, I was able to see different learning techniques. First, while walking into my first observation at Deering, I noticed a beautiful concrete wall, painted with all vibrant colors which helped set a good mood while entering the school. Before going into the school, we had to be buzzed in to have secretary unlock the door. First, the middle school eight graders kept a better attention span and stayed on with almost every student compared to the high school juniors and seniors who stopped paying attention every fifteen minutes to play a game or look on their phones. Another difference that I noticed was that middle school classes where a little shorter than the high school class periods. I found this pretty interesting because I feel that middle school students should have the same amount of time in classes as the high school students because it can make it easier for the change over from middle school to high school easier for
