One’s competencies are one of the most important factors of holding any position. Generally, unless the position has been newly recreated, there is an understanding of what one needs to be able to do in order to perform the job. It is also important to remember that competencies can be developed along with other skills. Therefore, one may not be prepared to take a position at this point, however, given formal and auto-didactic study, work experience, and informational interviews, one can identify and develop the competencies necessary to perform such a job.

The Dean of Instruction is has a series of reporting departments including the Associate Dean of Academic Support, the Instructional Department Specialist, the Library Administrator, and the Student Success and Support Programme. Given the overarching types of responsiblities associated with this position, it would appear that it falls somewhere in between a Leadership role and a Teaching/Learning role. The reason for this statement is clarified within the Core Competency Statements of this paper.

Management
Current trends in higher education management are pushing for efficiency (Meek, 2009), however, one must also remember that the ones who are keeping the organisation going are humans and do have limits. Management should be goal orientated, but the smaller objectives should also be a point of focus and celebration upon completion.
Diversity
Diversity is a very multi-faceted issue. There is a need for diversity in respect to being culturally, ethnically, socio-economically, etc. sensitive (Dean of Instruction, 2016), but, there is also a call for diversity within the curricula and environments themselves (University Business Staff, 2016). As such, there is a need for a dean to keep up on research, keep in contact with other administrators, and maintain communication with his or her staff.
