Leadership and management are an integral part of every nurse’s job, from staff nurse through to those in official executive roles. Management responsibilities such as organising, planning, delivering and evaluating care are activities that a nurse will enagage with every single day while at work. With an ever-limited and aging workforce, a decrease in available resources, a more acutely ill patient population and a profound period of change within the National Health Service (NHS) today’s health care workers are exposed to high stress levels to meet the demands required of them, which is resulting in effective nursing leadership and management being a challenging and difficult task.…

Nurses must be able to recognize what constitutes an unhealthy work environment in order to correct the issues present and be able to provide quality care. For example, if a nurse is situated in an environment not conducive to maintaining professionalism, the nurse must tactfully address the issues. If a peer is not communicating effectively, the nurse could discuss improving communication techniques with them. If a new nurse requests assistance, the experienced nurses could lend their helping hand and use the situation as a teaching opportunity. Not only does this strengthen the professional community, but also, these methods ensure that patients are receiving the best and most positive care while hospitalized.…

This is uncivil behavior that needs to be changed in order to maintain a healthy work environment. This is described in Stopping the Culture of Workplace Incivility in Nursing when the author states, “Nurses will have to work together to ensure that communication between veteran nurses, new graduates or novice nurses, and other members of the healthcare team is collegial, respectful, and helpful” (Khadjehturian, 2012, p. 639). This illustrates how without the respect and civil behavior occurring throughout all members of the healthcare team, that proper patient care is unable to be performed. Although the actions of one individual seem to be…

My top three AONE nurse leader competencies are Leadership, Knowledge of the health care environment and Business skills. Although all the 5 competencies are important, I chose these three because Leaders have unique trait and abilities in relating with others. They have the ability to interpret the environment where a situation is emerging, and enter the situation in the absence of a script or defined plan. According to Yoder-Wise( 2015), “ Leadership is required when the unknown presents itself, necessitates the use of principles to improvise solutions, and helps others to cope, thrive, and function at a high capacity based on the situation” (p. 4).…

Leadership in Nursing Leaders are often thought of corporate executives and administrators, political representatives, military generals, or those who are the head of an organization. Nurses are also considered leaders because they make a difference every day in the lives of their patients and patients’ families by using their knowledge to manage and meet the patient’s needs (Kelly, 2012, p. 2). Leaders are not always managers, but are individuals that inspire others and do the right thing. Nurse leaders take a certain type of person and the best way to understand that is to interview a leader about the style of leadership used, the characteristics of a leader, and how they empower their staff.…

This essay will explore my role as a shift leader and coordinator in a forensic care setting during a shift at my last placement. It will evaluate actions taken during this span of duty, lesson learnt and my learning needs. Nurses now work in management and leadership roles in addition to their clinical roles to meet academic, economic and management challenges (Grossman & Valiga, 2012; Mannix et al., 2013).
