Coming into this class I was expecting to learn a lot but what I wasn’t expecting was to learn so much that I would be able to apply to both my personal life and professional career. I am graduating after this summer semester with my BBA General Business Management degree, if I could give advice to COBE students, I would highly recommend this course because so much of what I’ve learned from this course is applicable in the business setting. Although I learned a great amount from this course, I look forward to continuing to work on my nonverbal communication skills in order to help improve interactions in both my personal life as well as in the workplace.
From this course, I have found that some of my strongest nonverbal communication skills include: usage of clothing and other artifacts in nonverbal communication, controlling and interpreting eye behavior, and the ability to receive nonverbal signals. On the other hand, I feel as though I struggle with controlling my facial expressions, I feel as though I am extremely readable even when I don’t necessarily want people to know how I am feeling or what I am thinking.

From the text, I found that some research supports the belief that clothes are an important factor in first impressions, I completely agree with this. In both personal and professional interactions I make sure I am dressed appropriately because I know that clothing and other artifacts can greatly effect how I am perceived and perception is everything in a lot of cases. One example of using clothing and other artifacts in nonverbal communication would be last week at an interview, ensuring I was well dressed and looked professional. I made sure I dressed professionally because I wanted to make a good first impression with my interviewer and make sure I came across as both professional as well as prepared and

The settings for all three of these observations were the same; they took place at Dos Gringos. I found myself at this location, because I was invited by an old high school friend. This was my first official bar attending experience since I have turned twenty-one. The plan was after work to meet up with my friend who was going to already be there with a group of her friends. I know generally a bar is not a conventional setting to write about in a scholarly paper.…

Before a movie plays on a movie theater screen there is a message about turning off your cell phones before the movie to be courteous to everyone. This is proof of how there are many rules that are in communication, such as not being on your cell phone during a movie. Communication has rules that govern our everyday lives more than others believe and breaking them will inevitably create reactions regardless of the rules broken. For this communication exercise I chose three nonverbal and three verbal rules to break, some implicit and some explicit. Through this paper I will be discussing what nonverbal rules I broke, what verbal rules I broke, the difference between verbal and nonverbal communication, whether context impacts the meaning of the…

Nonverbal cues are helpful when interpreting a message in a face-to- face conversation, feelings may be expressed through the “speaker’s loudness, tone of voice, pace of speech, as well as watching the speaker’s facial expressions, posture, gestures and so on” (Hughes, Ginnett, and Curphy, p. 290). This theory emphasizes daily exchanges between individuals so as to develop an understanding of basic human interactions via three core principles: meaning, language and thought. One’s identity of self is derived from how they perceive things, how they speak in relation to others and what is meaningful. Interpreting a situation, understanding verbal and nonverbal communication as to how it relates to one’s self and someone/thing else is the underlying concept of understanding this theory. In face-to-face interactions, our style of communication includes both verbal and nonverbal cues. Author, B. Strong (2014), reports: “Even when you are not talking, you communicate by your silence (e.g., an awkward silence, a hostile silence, or a tender silence) (Strong, 2014, p. 232).” On the other hand, phone conversations, online and electronic interactions are restricted only to verbal communication through written words.…

Nonverbal communication plays a vital part in how people express meaning and information to others, as well as how we understand the engagements of individuals around us. In the interview, I as the interviewer was swivelling on my chair; this could have conveyed to the interviewee that I was not taking the interview seriously. Although, this did not impact too negatively on the interviewee as Egan’s (2010) in Healy’s (2012, p. 27) SOLER model was used to show the interviewee my engagement. This consisted of facing the interviewee squarely and maintaining an appropriate amount of eye contact. Further, nonverbal cues such as nodding was used to show the interviewee that I was engaged in what he was saying, which encouraged him to feel comfortable…
