Reflective Essay: My Experience As A Strong Writer

I have never really been a strong writer. I feel like my writing always gets the point across but if the subject is not something that I know a lot about or am passionate about, then the organization is bad and the content is a lot of fluff and nothing else. My writing is strong in the amount of information I put into it, but lacks nice vocabulary and transition words or phrases. My writing can be very informative like in a research paper, report, or essay. When I know the information I can put it in a paper in a way that the reader can understand it easily. I have a very simple writing style that many people can understand. I basically write the way I speak which is a good thing on a relating to people level but not so good when I’m trying to impress professors or apply for jobs or scholarships. I studied a lot about her and I learned about who she really was and what her goals and mottos are. A cool thing about Oprah is that she has a school in Africa where she houses girls and provides an education for them. I love this and would love to work for something like this after I earn my degree. All the papers that I wrote in my AP english class I am proud of. All that I was told to write about in that class was rhetoric and how it was used by authors in their writing. Even though I didn’t care about that at the beginning, in the end I wrote a paper on the types of rhetoric used in the book “Native Son.” I really liked this book because it made me think about oppression on a different level. I had never thought about the oppression of black women before seeing both factors that they were black and a woman. Both of these traits put them at the very bottom of the amount of respect they received. The thing I like most about writing besides sharing with others what you think, is that I learn a lot about the things I end up writing

I wrote one “source-based argumentative essay” in high school: my final essay from sophomore English. The guidelines were to write a four to eight page paper on any topic of your choice, but the thesis of the paper had to come across clearly. At the time, my personal goals were to write about something no one else would, as well as get an A in the class. As a future collegiate writer, I feel as though I have the habits and potential strengths to be successful, but my biggest weakness is that I do not know how to write a professional essay and I am a reluctant editor.…

I believe that I have the potential to be a good writer, as I wrote a seven-page research paper on the way children are becoming more intelligent with the use of the internet, as they have the ability to look up an answer to a question they do not know anytime of the day. I had an easy time writing the paper because we went over everything that needed to be in it beginning with an attention grabbing thesis and ending with a powerful conclusion. I flew through writing the paper, which made me confident that I was going to get a good grade (and I did), it made me feel that I had improved my writing abilities. I also had to write an analytical paper comparing Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein to a modern day problem in society. It was more difficult to write compared to the research paper because I had to compare it to a difficult read.…

My ability to write essays and research papers in the proper format and structure supports my claim that I am an average writer. Through my experience in AP Language, as well as AP Literature, I was taught how to construct essays utilizing rhetorical techniques, argumentative essays, and research papers. Writing a minimum of two essays per week allowed me to practice the craft of writing and ensure that when i am constructing an essay it is executed properly in structure. The ability to compose these varying types of papers show that I am an average writer. Being able to write and express complete ideas is a major part of writing.…

To me, writing is just ok, nothing special. It definitely isn’t something I get excited about. My first formal writing class was in 6th grade, where we followed The Institute for Excellence in Writing’s curriculum. My fellow classmates and I mainly wrote short, 1-3 paragraph reports on various historical topics. I did well in these classes, I just never really enjoyed the process of writing.…

As you requested, I am writing to share my past writing experiences which include what kinds of writing I have done in school, the feedback that I seek on my work before I turn in assignments, the memories that I have of writing, voluntary writing I have done, and much more. Past Experiences with Writing Previous to this course I have taken several mandatory English, Writing, and Literature courses in which I have gained experience that now impact the way I write. Whether we know it or not in this modern society we are writers everyday of our lives. These interactions shape not only how we communicate but how we write as well. Personally, I have been shaped by the influence of both other writers I have known and those I have only read the creations of. Those same influences contributed to both my writing style in the classroom and to my identity as a writer. I spent a lot of my childhood with my nose deep in fiction novels at near by libraries.…

Through my experiences with writing essays in high school, I have noticed a few strengths and weaknesses with my writing. My main strength is the structure of my writing. I know what to say when I need to so I don’t tend to ramble on to tangents. Another strength I have is writing about topics that I love because I can just spill all my thoughts out onto paper and never have to worry about having enough sentences.…

I find this part hard because there is times where I don’t know what I need to change to make the writing better. Usually after the first draft I get stuck and don’t know how what I have to change or add. Something that I do like is to get feedback from other people. Some people would argue that getting feedback from others is not too good but most of the time it works for me. The reason why I like others to read my writing is because it helps me catch some errors in my writing.…

My Relationship with Writing Throughout my life, I have had a “love-hate” relationship with writing. I have always had a passion for written word. However, I learned early on that passion alone is not enough. There is a vast array of skills required to write well. Unfortunately, my Junior High English teachers were quick to inform me that I severely lacked said skills.…

It has always terrified me because I have difficulty putting my thoughts down on paper. This course has proven to be highly inspiring to me as well as frightening. It has really taught me more about the understanding of the writing process and structure, in which helped me to not focus so much on the actual writing parts.…

The argumentative essay was widely regarded as the hardest essay we are going to have to type this year. The hardest part, in my opinion, was to heavily implement our voice so that we did not turn this into a research paper. The essay was more I had always thought of myself as a good writer, so I thought college writing would not be too hard. This was not the thought when I got my first rough draft back. I then knew college writing was going to be harder than I expected.…

My strengths in writing are that I’m very confident about sharing my opinion and I think I can bring a different viewpoint on topics. I’m also a good public speaker and I try to implement that into my writing and make my papers lively. In addition, I’m good at implementing quotes and examples into my papers and I think it makes my essays stronger. I also think my writing style is unique and doesn’t have a concrete structure to it. This is good because I can write different types of papers while still sticking to my…
