I developed a sense of freedom to express myself. I could tell my grandmother many of the things that I would not tell my parents. This was especially important when my parents were getting a divorce. I felt that she had the ability to stay neutral throughout the situation, but would also have the ability to agree and accept every thought and feeling that I had. She is the type of person that gives, gives, gives, but never takes. I feel like she is natural Caregiver at heart. I have learned that this acceptance of everyone is what has made her be mindful and loving. I feel that people can sense her personality, and therefore can trust her easily. These characteristics are important when working with clients. Based on my childhood experience, I would want to replicate these characteristics.
I think that really knowing and believing in the value of play can make a huge difference. When I started practicum, I was not sure I believe in play. I feel that I was already setting myself up for failure for attempting to practice something that I did not believe in. However, this lack of enthusiasm for this technique also came from a lack of knowledge and understanding. I am and will continue to work on immersing myself in play therapy.
