Everyone has their ideal travel destination. They all want to be handed a small, golden ticket that can take them anywhere their heart desires: New York, Los Angeles, Tokyo. My destination, however, is a bit harder to get to. My golden ticket, fitting comfortably in the palm of my hand, not only takes me where I want to go but when I want to go. On the face of the ticket, in small ink-black letters, the name of the destination is etched across the paper. It reads: Victorian London. In a quick flash of bright light, I teleport to the beautiful age of Queen Victoria upon the redemption of my ticket. I look down at myself, ensuring that I am alright after the time jump, only for my eyes to be met with the luxurious and intricate design of lace and the stunning faded …show more content…

The onlookers and I revel in the words’ poeticness in dark and light, and, when he has pronounced the last syllable of the novel’s final word, we stand to our feet in applause for the writer and his work. The following night, my last night in the industrialized city, I find myself standing amongst the city’s aristocrats at a ball. Together, we waltz and laugh as I continuously trip over the hem of my dress as it swirls at my feet. Over the years and years spent on studying mythology, Joseph Campbell came up with the concept of The Hero’s Journey. Sadly, sixth grade was the year that I faced the most challenges, real world challenges at least.…

I've lived in the same town my whole life, and it has been really fun to watch it grow. All the kids in my neighborhood used to refer to the nearby hill as "Squirrel Hill. " We would climb to the top, play in the fields, and try to avoid stepping on cacti. However, as the years went by, houses and roads started appearing on Squirrel Hill until there weren't any fields to play in. Residential areas have been growing so quickly that a new high school had to open a few years ago.…

Nearly every summer and winter break of my childhood was spent in the heart of Tillamook Country— a small coastal community called Neskowin. My family would gather with a rotating pool of close relatives in our favorite beach rental, dubbed the Octagon House for its distinct shape, central fire pit, and wrap around porch. For the children, the vast beaches served as open fields for soccer and football. The coarse sand an open canvas for castle blueprints and secret messages. Sand dollars switched hands as if they were currency.…

Similar to ‘An Unknown Girl’, the story begins with the protagonist deeply unhappy with her station in life, feeling as if she deserved to belong to a different class. There is a series of events building up to when the persona feels most accepted at the reception of the Ministry of Education. However, unlike a poem, this short story has a clear climax: when Madame Loisel loses the necklace. Thus ensued her spiralling descent into poverty, and her ultimate acceptance of belonging to a lower middle-class family. Dialogue is also used tellingly to convey the central protagonist’s wish to belong to a higher class.…
