Personal Narrative: My Experience With Teach Forward Houston

Improved Essays
My experience with Teach Forward Houston is a bit different from most of my fellow TFH students. When my high school advisor told me about the program, I applied just to see if I could get it, that was the only reason I applied for the program I did not know all the benefits of being part of group at the time. I thought TFH was just going to offer me money and a job when I get graduate. I did not take it much serious, even at the day of my interview, I did not even know I had interview and a day after my interview day when all my teachers and friends asked me about how my interview went I did not know what they were talking about because I did not check my email and did not show up for my own interview. That’s when I start taking it seriously, …show more content…
When I first applied for TFH I was just about getting into my first choice college without worrying about money. Even though my reason for applying to the program was misguided I am glad I did because joining the program is the best choice I ever made for my future. Knowing I am guaranteed to have a job with HISD doing what I love for at least 4 years and knowing whenever I need help I could ask my peers and knowing that they would be happy to help me is something most college students don’t have. The most beneficial component of the Teach Forward Houston to me is the being able to communicate and learn with students who are going through exactly what I am going through, from what I have gathered I can surely say that the program makes all of us a team that help each other to great deal of …show more content…
Ms. Laud has been very helpful giving us real life scenarios regarding our major and asking as questions like how would you handle this type of situation? Where we had to think to come up with the right way to solve whatever situation. The most beneficial thing about this class is that, it is preparing us (the students) how to deal with problems inside a class room once when graduate. It is very helpful to figure out the best way to solve any problem right now rather later when we are teachers because like how my soccer coach used to say “practice makes perfection” what I mean is that when we had to solve a situation inside a classroom after we graduate and start working it is good to be prepared and ready to fix whatever it is. The most enjoyable component of CORE 1101 for me has been the Honor and pleasure of me being in the same classroom with just the Cohort 1 students and being thought by Ms.

It’s made me think harder and work harder, it’s pushed me out of my comfort zone, and ultimately has made me a different, but better person. I’ve become someone that sets a goal, and persistently strives to reach that goal, even when it’s hard and there seems to be no gain from trying. I’ve become someone who can work with a group of people that are different than each other, because we are not all that different. I can talk about business with confidence, I can speak in front of a group of people, and I can tell the difference between a Brahman and an Angus. I’ve truly learned and experienced more than I ever thought possible, all because I joined FFA five long years…

I grew up in this area and attended this school growing up and I felt it was a great school to attend. The Nebo School District's mission statement is "we engage, empower, and collaborate to ensure student success". The school received a 5 out of 10 rating and the neighborhood is quite large, but for the most part is quiet and has a low crime rate.…

Coming to Houston from a country where opportunities are very limited and economy is a challenge for the youthful, has made the last two years a little rough and hopeful at the same time for me and my family. Therefore, school is the most important in my life, after my family; I dedicate my time and my efforts to not become just the first professional in my family, but also to be an exemplary person in society thanks to the values that my parents have instilled in me. Before coming to Houston, I studied three years of Industrial Design in Colombia; although I loved my career, I think that I was too young (15 years old) to appreciate what school was providing me and to be sure what I wanted to do in life. Once I got here I understood that what…

At times I think it’s often quite normal for new teachers to become overwhelmed their first year teaching. Especially at a school where there may not be enough resources to adequately assist them, this leaves many new teachers to fend for themselves.
