Learning a second language have always been rough, but after surpassing countless obstacles blocking my path, I am finally enjoying this language and using this as a tool to communicate with foreigners. This summer I am applying for Exeter Summer to gain experience on boarding schools and to see what payed off after countless time dedicated to learning this second language.

One of my favorite things about design is that there is no such thing as being perfect. There’s no such thing like other subjects where they can just give you a question and ask you if it is right or wrong. Design class is more interdisciplinary, I was able convey all my thoughts from each of my subject and make a big piece combining all my knowledge. In design we could talk about the hot potato such as recent news or recent articles that we read about, or we could talk about the elephant in the room such as problems with the school or our curriculum that we are in right now and how we can improve it. Either when it comes to the elephant in the room, or the hot potato, we can give the whole class a penny of our thoughts on how we can solve these issues. In design class, we often bite off more than we can chew, we a lot more than what the school curriculum provides us, allowing us to explore deeper in real life circumstances. This opportunity provided in design class is far cry from the learning in other classes when there often is only one …show more content…
I have been attending to multiple summer camps with my cousin. I have attended two periods Center for Talented Youth (CTY) summer camp, 1 period of Capital Debate and 1 period of Great Books. All these summer camps helped me stockpile lots of experience on living without my parents, either when it comes to doing laundry or building new friendship outside of my comfort zone. In this year since I am preparing to apply for high schools so joining the Exeter Summer to get a summer experience in famous schools like Philips Exeter and a even deeper understanding of what it is like in a boarding school. Comparing to my other summer camps, this summer camp is slightly longer so I wish that I can build even more friendship and learn even more. In this summer camp, there is a even more huge variety of sports and activities so that I can learn sports that could be important for my future in high schools, the big range of sports activities can allow me to try out different kind of sports so that I can know the choices I can choose from in the future. Overall, this summer camp packed together the different sports activities, academic learning and friendship so that it can better prepare me for the

On my one and only vacation last summer, I got the privilege on going to my first Younglife camp. The camp name was Carolina Point in Brevard, North Carolina. At the camp they had many activities: swimming, go-carting, disc golf, mountain biking, zip-lining, paddling boarding, and hiking. My favorite part about this trip was the day we took a whole camp trip to hike the nearby mountain. At the camp they had some kids with disabilities that couldn’t necessarily get up the mountain by themselves.…

Camp is place unlike any other. It is a place that people’s wall begin to fall down and new relationships are formed. This is bound to happen when you drop 200 teenagers in the middle of the Smoky Mountains without any of their electronics. I was lucky enough to be chosen for the Project Serve team and got to see camp from a new perspective. I got to be a part of all of the behind the scenes work, but also daily interactions with all of the campers due to my job at camp.…

Much research showed the benefits of bilingualism in many aspects. The most important benefit is bilingual children can use languages for traveling, learning the other culture, making new friends, and working. Bilinguals have better social understanding than monolinguals. Also, bilinguals show cognitive advantages. The body language of all the students was tense as they hunched over their works looking for flaws that might cost them precious points on their AP exam. When I commented on the stressed atmosphere of the class, one student stated, “I love this class and the people and the atmosphere, but I hate the pace.” Art is a way for many students to express emotion such as anger, sadness, or to achieve a sense of peace and relaxation. These looming deadlines that determine their success in the course detract from the enjoyment that art provides for many of the students. When people think of art, myself included, the thought is that art should be a free and uncontainable concept that flows from the creator of the works not confined by any restricting deadlines.…

So, when I was too old to be a camper there, the high schoolers will be assisting the counselors to do their job, and I was given the chance to experience to every grade level and how every grade behaves and interacts with one another, and every time I was in a group of campers they always listened and were enthusiastic in my presence. I was excited to find out that the first day of the week that the campers truly liked me, and it has directed me to become friendlier to people and granted me with improved social skills. Working with kids is much different than working with adults, children are often more energetic and less likely to retain information you present to them. Supporting English Language Learners There are an increasing number of non-native English speakers in schools around the United States. Schools are faced with the daunting task of providing an education that meets the needs of every student, including those who have a language barrier. According to Tom Stritikus, many linguistically diverse students fall into two categories: National Merit Scholars and high school dropouts (Laureate Education, 2009a). More must be done to ensure that ELL students fall into the National Merit Scholar category as opposed to the dropout category.…

Process Paper I have chose my driving question “why don’t most Americans learn a second language” specifically because learning a second language has always been one of my interests. I got my idea of choosing this driving question from Watching my aunt and uncle communicate with each other. This project has really helped benefit the way I listen to communication and how when using another language it is easier to understand things through a different perspective. My research process started out by using britanica to search facts about why Americans don't learn a second language.…

Reflective summary Language learning and teaching course is a necessary course for everyone interested in the field of teaching English as a second language. This course provided me with theories and explanations in how human acquired the first and second language and what factors can affect their ability to acquire the language. There are three theories that have been described first language acquisition. Behaviorist approach insists that language behavior is a production of correct response to a particular stimulus. Functional approach focused on the social interaction while the nativist theory insists that we are born with the inner ability to understand and developed language.…

During this unit I attended a primary school to work with some children that are learning English as an Additional Language or Dialect (EALD). I worked with two children, Z and B. After talking to their teacher I found out that Z had been at the school for the semester and did not respond to any English or try to communicate in English at all. This was slightly worrying as I was unsure how I was going to connect with her. B, on the other hand, had a good grasp on the English language. However, he did have some issues with pronunciation of English words, making him harder to understand.…

Despite the importance of the grammar instruction in any language, I believe that grammar should not be included in second language classes for beginners who just start to learn a language. The beginners should learn how to understand the language first. The grammar instruction will be not useful for the students unless they understand the meaning. After they become in the intermediate level, they are eligible to study grammar. Then, when the students become in advance level, they should no longer take grammar classes again.…

Humans are not unique in this capability, with various species, including animals and even some plants, communicating with each other.…

1.Introduction Language proficiency is the linchpin of nonnative EFL teacher competencies ( ACTFL, 2002; Andrew, 2003; Ben-Peretz, 2010; Butler, 2004; Elder & Ok Ki, 2014;Farrell & Richards, 2007; Murdoch, 1994; Richard, 2012; Richards, Conway, Roskvist & Harvey, 2013; Seidlhofer, 1999). For example, Murdoch called language proficiency as “the bedrock of non native EFL teachers’ professional confidence” (p. 254). In the same vein, research by Seidlhofer (1999) shows that language teacher’s confidence is dependent upon his or her own level of language proficiency, so a teacher who perceives herself or himself to be weak in the target language will have low confidence in her or his teaching ability. Due to the importance of language proficiency…

Even the words we have used as recently as the 30’s have developed, things are no longer ‘spiffing’ they are great. This example becomes even more exaggerated and apparent when we compare the language of Shakespearian England to today. If there had been a band of people to rally against the word ‘thy’ becoming ‘thee’ and then ultimately the word we know today ‘the’ then we would perhaps still have linguistic feet planted in the past. As is stands new words enter the dictionary every year. There is not argument when ‘copernicium’ enters the dictionary (a word so new the spell check on my computer doesn’t recognise)…
