Personal Narrative: My Internship At Florida State University

While attending Florida State University for the past 3 years, I have managed to conquer a handful of classes. Throughout lectures, labs, and long nights studying, I have always contemplated whether or not this information is going to beneficial to me in the “Real World”. As daunting as the “Real World” seemed to be in the past, it no longer seems to be such a scary place due to the knowledge I have gained from my time in the classroom as well as the time I spent interning at Mad Men Marketing this summer. Yes, there are a lot of classes that are required as prerequisites that in no way, shape, or form correlated to the skills needed to understand and complete various tasks at my internship, but at the same time I firmly believe that having some background in a variety of subjects is crucial in understanding the world and becoming a well rounded intellectual. I was able to assist every department within the agency in some way, which allowed me to gain an array of experience dealing with different aspects of agency work. Although I have no formal design experience, it was nice that I was able to help out the graphic design department with opinions and direction on their designs and getting to work with that department was something I never thought I would be able to do. Another aspect of my internship that I really appreciated was that I was not given stereotypical intern work. Tasks such as fetching coffee and cleaning the office were not included at all in my internship which made the internship experience that much more valuable as I was able to actually learn about the industry and focus on my future, rather focusing on how complicated a Starbucks order can be; ergo, there is little I would change to improve the intern position at Mad Men
