My Motivation To Study Social Work

Motivation
When it came down to deciding what I wanted to major in, I really struggled coming to a conclusion. I have considered many different majors including nursing, biology, and teaching. I knew that I ultimately wanted to help others and be a positive influence, in the world, but deciding where I could do this best was challenging. When exploring what majors that NC State had to offer, I really did not know what social work actually was. After learning more about what the major entitled I thought that it could possible be something that I would really enjoy. Ever since deciding to major in social work, I have struggled to have confirmation that this is where I am supposed to be and if being a social worker is really something that I feel I want to spend the rest of my life being. I decided to take this course to help me learn more about what the field of social work encompasses and to clear up if this is where I am supposed to be in my life. As I continue to struggle to make a definite decision, I feel that this class has drawn me closer to the field of social work. My grandmother is on a very low budget and has to have financial support from the government. She currently lives three hours away from my family and in an unsafe neighborhood so we have been looking for her a new apartment. As we have been searching, we have noticed that there are hardly any apartments that are affordable and in good conditions to live in. The price of housing continues to skyrocket yet very few are receiving an increase in pay or government funding. This is especially true for those who are on government assistance and really need the money. Social justice issues among the less fortunate is often overlooked because those who are oppressed do not have the resources to make their problems
