One of the advantages of the therapeutic alliance is constant awareness of the client. The educator should stay attuned to clients, demonstrate cultural empathy, and be respectful and open to different opinion. If the participant does not assume his/her personal responsibility to learn and improve behavior, he will not benefit from the therapeutic alliance regardless the time and effort the educator puts in learning process. From the other side, if an educator fails in providing positive reinforcement and empowerment for the learner, the relationship will not be beneficial for the participants. Another potential barrier is lack of empathy from the educator or violation of personal space. The participant should experience the sense of caring and empathy. The language that educator uses can also create the barrier. The information provided to participant should be provided in an easy to understand terms to facilitate learning process. Violations of confidentiality can affect therapeutic alliance. All information that participant share with an educator in a private session should be kept private. Lack of sensitivity to ethnic and gender differences can create potential barrier. Any therapeutic relationship should be free from any prejudice and racial or ethnic discrimination.
