You are taught to use good judgment towards every situation because many view your background based on your upbringings. Parents teach young children the difference between right and wrong and you are either rewarded or punished according to your actions. For example, if a person does good it may lead to things such as a toy as a child, money, or candy to show that good actions lead to a positive result. However, on the flipside wrongdoing sends someone down a path that could lead to disciplinary actions such as timeout in early years of life, jail, or even death. Would we be as far as we are at the current moment in life? It is highly doubtful that doing good and using morals have resulted in shortcomings in life. The importance of having morals is at high demand in order to maintain structure in the community. In the text “Problems from Philosophy” by James and Stuart Rachels addressed the story of Gyges told by Glaucon in Book 1 of Plato’s Republic. In the story Gyges discovered a ring which would make him become invisible, and with the powers he could do anything and go anywhere, without detection of his actions. Without the detection resulted in Gyges seducing a queen, killing the king, and taking over the throne. Although some may agree that becoming a King was a good advantage, it strongly demonstrated to the audience that he let temptation get the best of him. We are often faced in life with temptation but it is necessary we do good and do what is right. With the new advantages lead to Gyges having no self-destruction, forgetting the definition of good morals, and becoming evil. Having the power to become invisible would be very tempting to some, because you never could be punished for actions.
