Minerals are needed in the human body. Minerals are classified as major minerals or trace minerals. Major minerals include calcium and phosphorus. While, trace minerals include iron and zinc. Major minerals are defined as a mineral vital to health that is required in the diet in amounts more than 100 milligrams per day. Over 99% of the calcium in the human body strengthens bones and teeth. Calcium is often, found in dairy products like milk and cheese. Some secondary sources for calcium are in foods like bread, rolls, and crackers. Calcium has several functions; such as blood clotting, muscle contractions, and the regulation of cellular metabolism. A person with a iron-deficiency anemia will have sumptoms such as shortness of breath, dizziness, weakness, and pale skin. Iron is part of the hemoglobin that is found in red blood cells and also, myoglobin which is found in muscle cells. Hemoglobin molecules in red blood cells function to trancsport oxygen (O2) from the lungs to cells. Then, some assist in returning some carbon dioxide (CO2) from cells to the lungs. Iron is part of some enzymes, such as proteins, which the body 's cells use in the production of energy. Iron can contribute to drug detoxification within the liver and bone health. Iron toxicity is a result of a genetic disease called hereditary hemochromatosis. Hemochromatosis is a result of increase of iron absorption. People with this disease, iron found in their body eventually builds up to deadly amounts (mainly in the blood and liver). If hemochromatosis goes untreated then, the excessive iron deposits lead to severe organ damage, mainly in the liver and heart. The RDA for ironin both men and women 50 years or older is 8 milligrams. RDA levels in women 19 to 50 years old is 18 milligrams. The reason for high RDA levels in yound and middle age women is because, of menstrual blood loss. The Adequate Intake (AI) for iron are as follows; in males and females from birth to 6 months is 0.27 mg, males and females 7-12 months is 11 mg, males and females 1-3 years old is 7 mg, males and females 4-8
