Personal Narrative Essay: Midnight Special Jumping

Midnight Special auditions were in the late August of 2016, and the pressure was monumental. The people who made it into Midnight Special were the best of all singers in the school. Therefore, I saw these auditions as a way to prove to myself and others of my talent for singing. I thought of the auditions as a self-discovery, but ended up ripping my soul out-- for a while. My thoughts varied in the spectrum from moderate confidence to torturous worry and fear. The most prominent fear I was facing in this early start of 6th grade was the fear of failure. I have rarely failed at anything, which I thought was success at first. However, when I failed my audition, it led me to believe that failure is never the end of success. We both walked inside the building, and once we entered, my emotions and memory flew back into my body. Immediately, my senses came back as well, and now the colorless objects looked as radiant as ever. With my mother following behind me, I turned right, walking to the chorus room. I pondered on whether my friend Andrew would make it into Midnight Special, as that was both our goals. Hopefully, I thought to myself. My mother waited outside as I walked inside the chorus room. My glasses reflected the stunning light in the empty room, making them look glossed to perfection. I heard a door close to my right, and jerked my head to the side. However, there was nothing to be worried about; it was just another chorus student trying out for Midnight Special.
“Good luck!” she exclaimed.
“Thank you,” I replied. I was going to need luck, maybe even more than I

His eyes glimmered with excitement. I was prepared for what he was going to say, ready to shrug off the reassurement. However, my prediction was incorrect. Instead of him reassuring me that I would make it into Midnight Special, he told me that Midnight Special results were being shown at the end of the day. My fear erupted like lava from a volcano. Worry was all that clouded my brain. The fear of failure developing in my mind grew and grew from that point on. I presumed that it would go away eventually, but I wouldn’t know until I saw the audition results on a piece of paper right outside of the chorus room, with my name under

I don’t fail often. I tend to be good at the things I attempt, usually with little or no effort on my part. I don’t say this to brag about how lucky I am, but to give context. Since I don’t fail often and am generally used to success, the times I have failed make a prodigious impression on me. I am a choir kid.…

In the story “The Leap,” the narrator effectively displayed forms of a leap; in a physical way and emotional way. The use of first-person narration is efficacious in conveying the message in a powerful way. The narrator created her mother’s character by using stories that she most likely heard from her mother and built it from her point of view. This aided me as a reader to visualise her mother’s character in her perspective, a daredevil, but a loving, caring and heroic mother. The contrast the narrator made between her life and her mother’s also helped readers to discern how “colourful” and alluring the lifetime of her mother is, compared to her own where she described it as, “my failed life where the land is flat.”…

Everyone has a different perspective and interpretation about failure. Some people see failure as an unpleasant thing or a limitation of their capabilities, while others see failure as a learning opportunity or a guide on how to become better. For example, in the article, “Want to Get Into College? Learn to Fail,” the author, Angel B. Perez, implies that failure should not be feared because it is not as harmful as most people think it is. He points out that failure is necessary if we want to succeed in college and in life.…

Through my experience, my freshman and sophomore years as a musician were terrifying. On top of the shock of the new atmosphere at school, I had to play my instrument with and in front of others, which was quite a stretch for me at the time. I would always beat myself up about minute mistakes I had glorified during rehearsals, playing tests, and especially auditions. However, after I did not make an Illinois Allstate ensemble my junior year, my approach to these nerve-wracking situations completely changed. Instead of thinking failing negatively, those uncomfortable experiences actually made me improve as I had taken more auditions.…
