Without memories, life is meaningless. This quote is true to the story because it explains the story of the community. They are living in a society with no feelings, no danger, and no excitement. Sameness is when the community makes it to where everything and everyone is fair, no one is higher level than another person. Having no real feelings in the community means they can’t feel true happiness, and no true sadness. The receiver keeps the memories so that the community feels no pain, but not by choice. The receiver is “not assigned, but they are selected.”(Page 75) Therefore the receiver has no choice in the matter. Imagine living a life with no excitement, and with sameness.
So in conclusion the community has no real life, and are living in a world not worth living. The community needs the memories to feel, and to love, but they don’t have that, they are numb. They have pills for pain, the Giver, or receiver, for memories, and climate control, for no dangers. In The Giver the community Has no real life, because without memories life is meaningless. This quote is so true to the story because the community can’t feel, and their life isn’t worth
