Summative Essay Prior to pursuing my undergraduate degree at Dallas Baptist University writing was not a strong suit of mine. Contrary to popular belief, math was always my proffered subject. Unfortunately, I did not encounter Professor Hutchins until the last semester of my undergraduate degree. Although it seemed as though it was too late to repair my writing skills, she still managed to completely reconstruct my way of thinking toward grammar and writing and even my perspective of life.
Memorable and Distinctive Elements I, personally, retain the least amount of information when instructed by way of long traditional lectures. Thankfully, Professor Hutchins exerted multiple methods of teaching. One of the elements she used was a discussion form of lecturing. She created an open yet professional atmosphere for questions and dialogue throughout the lecture. For instance,

Her class was one of the classes in which I genuinely enjoyed having. I could actually see myself growing and learning session after session. I believe strongly that learning comes through the process of turning information into knowledge through the regeneration of experience. In the article, Teaching and Learning Using Experiential Learning and Reflection for Leadership Education, the authors indicated that knowledge derived from the mixture of grasping and transforming experience (Guthrie and Jones, 2012, p.54). Professor Hutchins class required a lot of editing and writing papers. This is where the learning process started in my case. Every assignment included hands on practice of what was taught the previous day in class. She administered writing tests opposed to the typical multiple choice/fill-in-the-blank tests. In doing so, I was able to actually exercise what I was being taught opposed to memorizing answers then forgetting immediately after testing.

During this semester of English W131, I have experienced both accomplishments and setbacks while learning how to improve my writing skills. Throughout the course, I have learned that writing is not only about how much information is in the paper, but also about how well the writer’s thoughts are expressed throughout the text. Practicing many different styles of writing as I did in the class has helped me tremendously with my delivery in my writing. I believe that this course was one to prepare us for future writing courses with professors we will encounter who will give us feedback that may puzzle us because it will require more work and more thinking. Although I have had difficulty in the class, I do believe that I have learned from my mistakes and that I am finishing the course with stronger writing skills that will help me though the rest of my college career and life.…

It was a cold, winter morning. The frigid air blew as I turned to pull the handle on the door to the main building of my small high school. After entering the doorway, I dragged my feet across the floor and trudged through the empty hallway. As I peeked through each of the door windows, I saw nothing but dark, empty classrooms. It was not until I looked up that I noticed one lit room at the end of the hall.…

Please include your teaching philosophy statement here, and provide specific examples of how it informs your practices as an LA or as a Study Group Leader. Coming into college I always assumed I’d be ready for the challenges that I would face here. I went to class and listened to professors lecture material, which more than often made little to no sense. It was hard adapting to college, my learning techniques remained the same from high school, but my success did not. It was then that I realized that I needed to learn how to learn.…

It was also very interesting to see how the teacher handled both the classroom management while demonstrating discipline for students behavior in order for the information that was being presented to effectively be received by those within the classroom. Anything that caused a disruption from the lecture was quickly addressed and the students were able to be get back on topic quickly in order to retain the information more effectively. Finally, I also enjoyed how this particular teacher had the classroom set up for the students to be able to effectively learn the material while also being engaged within the subject. It gave me a lot of ideas for what I can possibly do to make my room both a place of love and a place of learning. I realize that this visit has taught me some valuable information that I will always remember and use for my own students.…

When I was first accepted to the University of Alabama at Birmingham, I did not know what adventures were going to come my way. I did not know what adversities were going to show themselves to me unsuspectingly. I knew I would face these adversities and I knew I would grow from them. This adversity in college has also presented itself in this English course by challenging who I am as a writer in the same way that UAB has challenged who I am as a person and as a student.…

After having Miss Kelley as my English teacher both freshman and sophomore year, I was rather nervous having a new teacher my junior year. I had become accustomed to Miss Kelley’s grading style and writing style. It would be fair to say that my writing style had transformed into the way it was due to her influence. My worries had soon dissipated when I realized that Mrs. Wecht’s writing style, although different than that of Miss Kelley’s, was not a terribly hard transition. I would like to think that overall I am a good writer.…

Tquisha, can you believe it? We have almost completed our third college class, yet it seems like only yesterday since we had orientation in Nashville, TN. As you stated in this week’s discussion post the connection between using proper grammar in our speech, and writing is a close one (T. Waller, personal communication, January 3, 2017). Furthermore, throughout this class, I have worked hard to speak grammatically correct, and I have noticed a small improvement that correlates to my writing. I believe that it is fair to say that our grasp of grammar has increased exponentially throughout this course, and I am excited to see our growth.…

As a first-generation immigrant, going to a four-year university straight after high school was always the plan. Life had a different idea, however. One General Education Diploma, two years and three mental illnesses later, the goal of getting a bachelor's degree is within reach. Much has happened since I started college, and resilience has blossomed into something that has kept me afloat through some of my toughest semesters. Resilience is my strongest trait as a student and learner, without it I would not be here at this point in my life, within months of transferring to a four-year university or a 3.5 GPA student.…

I leaped into my college career by smoothly transitioning from high school to college with the Bridge Program. During this program, the IUPUI staff gave brief introductions and lessons on what was generally expected in college. The English portion of this program reassured me that my AP English classes that I took in high school had prepared me well enough for college writing. However, I was still a little unsure exactly how much writing was expected due to the fluctuation in course experience due to professor variance. However, after attending the first couple of classes I was once again reassured that I was prepared for this basic English class.…
