They are the face of the front office. They are the ones that greet patients when they enter the hospital or clinic. A medical administrative assistant’s job is very important in the medical field. They are the ones that do everything behind the scene, dealing with lots of challenges. Without them the doctors and other medical colleagues would not be able to function. One of the reasons medical administrative assistants need to know medical terminology is so that they will be able to understand their colleagues, to know how to interpret what the doctors and nurses are talking about, and what they need to do in order to help with the patient’s future treatment plan for recovery. A MA needs to know the language of medicine in order to communicate with colleagues, to understand what they are saying and give them information about the patients. Knowing medical terminology helps them to fill out medical documents, fill out forms for a variety of reasons, or fill out patient charts. Of course the MA must be able to read those charts and then explain and communicate with their colleagues. Without medical terminology a medical worker would not be able to understand what the doctors or nurses need him or her to do, or be able to read the charts. Without medical terminology they will not be able to do the job right, they could even give the wrong medicine to the wrong patient. Terms and instructions have to be understood correctly because the patient’s life is on the line. MA’s need to make sure they know what they are doing and how to take care of the patients. With the knowledge of medical terminology MA’s will be able to understand their colleagues, help out with the patients, and explain the patient medical history.
