Ms. Marta Greene, RHIT, CCS is employed by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and is tasked with the project of compiling medical health information for astronauts in a research database. Ms. Greene’s background includes a Health Information Technology degree, RHIT and CCS certifications as well as 10 years of experience in the Health Information Management (HIM) field as an outpatient ER coder and an inpatient coder at a large university hospital. Her skill set is very well suited to the project that she is undertaking at NASA. Ms. Greene must maintain her certifications and credentials by continuing her education which means she would have an understanding of electronic technologies used by healthcare professionals including …show more content…
ICD-9-CM is outdated and SNOWMED-CT should be utilized with ICD-10-CM/PCS. The current project is using ICD-9-CM, so Ms. Greene should determine what steps should be taken to ensure that ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS can be implemented with NASA’s current research software. According to Bowman (2005) “ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS are better suited for use in EHR systems than ICD-9-CM as they represent modern medical practice and clinical knowledge, permit more robust mapping from SNOWMED-CT, and are more amenable to use in an electronic environment” (p 14). Ms. Greene would also be required to review past health information on paper and online records and create a cross-walk to the current ICD-10-CM codes. ICD-10-CM provides much more detailed information than ICD-9-CM and would be more beneficial in determining more accurate diagnosis, disease management, and procedures and trends common among the astronauts’ health and healthcare issues. ICD-10-PCS would enable NASA and Ms. Greene to track procedures the astronauts have had that are relevant to the research project. Ms. Greene also has the benefit of onsite doctors and nurses who care for the astronaut if she has any questions about past care …show more content…
ICD-10-CM/PCS is a coding convention that works together with SNOWMED-CT to provide comprehensive healthcare data to healthcare providers and would be beneficial in this project. Ms. Greene, working with the project manager, should determine the budget that NASA has provided for the project and the costs that would incurred during the implementation of SNOWMED-CT and ICD-10-CM/PCS. Due to the fact that some past healthcare data is coming from EHR sources, it would be helpful to have a system at NASA that communicates directly without the need to manually enter the data. The implementation of SNOWMED-CT would require purchasing an annual membership from the International Health Terminology Standards Development Organization. SNOWMED-CT developers could be utilized to assist in ensuring the SNOWMED-CT is the best option for this project. The benefits of implementing this system would be the ability to integrate healthcare information from multiple EHR sources into this project, the reduction in costs of manually inputting information, the enablement of decision support which would enable this project to determine clinical trends among the healthcare of the astronauts, determining more effective ways to treat the astronauts when common healthcare issues are identified, disease management and

The intent of the ICD coding system was to classify diseases, diagnosis, and treatments for study and tracking purposes. It was never intended for medical billing. However, as the healthcare industry changed in the 1970s and 1980s, payers started using the ICD-9 for billing. This close integration between the ICD-9 codes and medical billing has made the ICD-10 implementation difficult.…

The CPT or Current Procedural Terminology reference book includes a set of codes, descriptions, and guidelines determined by the American Medical Association, used to describe procedures performed by health care providers for billing purposes (Smiley, 2015). The tenth edition of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10) reference book provides a system of codes that classifies every disease and health finding identified by the provider, providing more than 68,000 different diagnosis codes (Smiley, 2015). The Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS), is a two-level coding system that identifies health care procedures, equipment, supplies, and to identify various items or services not included in the CPT medical code set (Center for Medicare & Medicaid Services, 2013). For example, if a patient come to the clinic only to receive a vaccine administered by a nurse, the vaccine administration would be the only reportable service (Smiley, 2015). For procedures such as vaccinations, an HCPCS code must be utilized for billing while an evaluation and management code would not be necessary (Smiley,…
