Why Math Is Important

If I was to describe mathematics I would describe it as using numbers to solve problems. According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, mathematics is “the science of numbers and their operations, interrelations, combinations, generalizations, and abstractions and of space configurations and their structure, measurement, transformations, and generalizations”. I believe mathematics is not just a class you have to take in school. It is not just a class that students dread to take in school. Some students will do anything to avoid mathematics. I prefer to take the path less traveled as poet Robert Frost would say, “I love math and would consider it my favorite subject in school since I was a kid”. I consider mathematics to be a unique and intelligent …show more content…
Numbers are used everywhere and I believe that mathematics is the most important class for anyone to take in school. Even for the basic survival job we need at least some knowledge of math. For example if I have to work in a store as a cashier when I am paid in cash and I need to do math in order to give them back the right amount of change make change I feel a little anxious because I know I need to do the math in order to give them back the right amount of change. I rely on a calculator most of the time but I wish I could do the math in my head because it would be much easier. I rely on a calculator most of the time but I wish I could do the math in my head because it would be much easier. I would love to understand math better, especially in using critical thinking. I feel like math helps us to think in a very different way than we usually do. Math forces us to use reasoning and patterns as opposed to simply writing down an answer and hoping it is …show more content…
I am hoping to learn new ways to think mathematically. I want to be able to connect what we learn to real world situations. I have yet to have a math class in this college and therefore I have high expectations. I am not expecting an easy A and I am willing to work for the grade I desire. I am looking forward to getting to meet new people in this class and also learning from them as well. I have always enjoyed learning from my peers and also helping them as well. I think that working in groups and trying to figure out the answer rather than listening to a teacher explain the answer is a great idea. I think it will help us expand our minds and bond with each other. I have already learned so much from the past few classes. I am only nervous about a few things. My biggest concern is how the grading will take place. I think the grading should be fair and I like the idea of having it based on participation. My biggest fear is the oral quizzes because I tend to do better on paper when it comes to explaining things. Overall, I am excited for this class and want to learn more about mathematics this

But math should not be a required subject through highschool and college in my opinion. Without the basic math skills we wouldn’t have a functioning banking system or even a working government. Math is a great subject, but to much math is not necessary. If anything schools could introduce higher math classes and let the individual student decide if they are interested in it. Hacker says, “Instead of investing so much of our academic energy in a subject that blocks further attainment for much of our population, I propose that we start thinking about alternatives.…

Many people have different opinions about what they think about math. For instance, I looked up opinions people said about math and most of them were negative. One person stated: “I know a lot of people don’t like it. For me, I was good at the subject, but I didn’t really enjoy it.” In the story “Why is Math so important for kids to learn?” by Elise Wile, the author’s attitude toward Math is interested for these reasons: (1) she explains how it teaches logical and critical thinking, (2) she explains how it teaches life skills, and (3) she also explains how it supports continuing education and careers.…

Math has always come fairly easily to me, starting when I took Algebra 1 as a seventh grader. I’ve excelled many years, even going into my school’s math and science program where the students are given honors math and science classes from ninth grade through twelfth grade. I’ve always been a step ahead in math so that is how I was able to enroll in calculus last year. Everyone else in my class was going to take BC Calculus so I thought I should too, I could handle it if they could.…

Is Algebra Worth the Work? Recently, I came across an editorial in the New York Times debating the reasoning behind requiring higher-level algebra in high school and college. Written by Andrew Hacker, a teacher at City University in New York since 1971, the article suggests that colleges and high schools shouldn’t actually require algebra in their everyday classes. On a personal note, I couldn’t agree more.…

Personal Statement The university application process is really frustrating in every country, but, the question is if the university to which you apply is a qualified one. The country from where I come didn't manage to recreate an educational system that can provide appropriate studies, cognitive matter and qualified professors, which is why it can't produce a fruitful harvest of students. Furthermore, throughout the years Martin Luther University managed to produce a significant amount of qualified students, and its main objective is to outline the essentiality of education and to provide a genuine example of it. I do volunteering for three years for “REPEMOL” (Regionalization of the Pediatric Emergency and Care Services in Moldova).…
