The Hierarchy of Needs Maslow’s Need of Hierarchy is a theory that is proposed by a psychologist Abraham Maslow that emphasize on the psychological needs and interpersonal needs in addition to physical needs and economic necessity which related to human motivation. (OB, 147) According to humanist psychologist Abraham Maslow, our actions are motivated in order achieve certain needs. Maslow labelled the five hierarchical categories as physiological needs, safety and security needs, love (social) needs, esteem needs, and the need of self-actualization. The five categories of the needs is displayed as a pyramid and the lower levels are made of the basic needs, whereas more complicated needs are placed at the upper level of pyramid. As people move to the upper level of pyramid, psychological needs and social needs are increasing. Soon, the need for love, friendship and intimacy play an important role. Further up to the pyramid, the need for personal esteem and feelings of accomplishment take priority and the tendency for people start to seek for social needs increased. …show more content…
When we fulfil all the needs at all the stages that was mentioned early, without self-actualization, we will soon feel helpless and restlessness unless we know what we are fitted for. Self-actualization is described by Maslow as a person's need to be and do that which the person was "born to do." "A musician must make music, an artist must paint, and a poet must write." Self-actualization comes from the within and it includes morality, creativity, spontaneity, acceptance, experience purpose, meaning and inner potential.
