Claudius is all about maintaining his own power, he is also a corrupt politician who can very well manipulate others. Claudius is very loyal to himself. Claudius seemed to have had strategized the killing of his king/brother Hamlet, and takeover as king of Denmark. In the process he also married the widow Gertrude to help him insure the throne snatching it away from Hamlet after the kings’ death. Once Claudius is aware that Hamlet killed Polonius, he was afraid that it could have been him in danger. Having the conscious of killing his brother eats him away, he worries about what he has to do to get rid of Hamlet this way he feels safe. When Horatio tells Hamlet that he has seen the ghost of king Hamlet, he is ecstatic to hear such news and wants to see it for himself. The moment that Hamlet meets with the ghost of his deceased father, he is told the horrific event that lead to his death and it was no accident. King Hamlet explains to Hamlet that Claudius was the one who poisoned him during his afternoon sleep. Hamlet is told that he needs to revenge his death at all cost. Hamlets loyalty to his father is shown after he promises that he will kill his father’s murderer. Now knowing the truth Hamlet sets out to prove that his father was murdered by his uncle Claudius he does not want to act just yet, he begins by requesting the players to act out The Murder of Gonzaga, this play acts out a father being murdered and the loving wife remarrying the kings brother. As Claudius becomes disturbed with the play, Hamlet knows that he has his uncle right where he wants him to be. Hamlet acts irrational from time to time, especially when killing Polonius, he did not hesitate to look who was behind the curtain. Hamlet disregards all threats being done to Denmark national security, this creates his own carelessness.
