Literacy in my life

Literacy and writing has played a huge role in my life since I was a child, and even still to this day. I learn something new everyday because of it and wouldn’t be nearly as functional without it.
In my opinion it is the most useful and important skill. Communication would be a difficult thing without it. I still can remember when my mom read to me every night when I was young. I most fondly remember reading Dr.Seuss with her. I think this is because it is unique versus others books. The Rhymes and pictures were attention grasping to me. Dr.Seuss is a very child friendly author and is a good way to introduce them to literacy.

When I first started to learn to read in Kindergarten it was in slow steps and rightfully

Green and she made class fun, interesting and easy to understand. Until later in the year when we had to read Huckleberry Finn which was a classical novel but I could not keep my eyes open during it. It was very boring for me and I didn’t really understand it. Long novels have never really captured my interest.

Sophomore year we read probably the most stories of any previous year, but they were shorter and more interesting to me. I found them easier to follow along with. Also we wrote many summaries and did more worksheets, which I found relatively easy, it was probably the smoothest year of english I have had.

All of these years of learning and examining literacy have been crucial and helpful in improving my everyday life. I can easily read anything I want as long as I put enough effort into it. It has also improved my communication skills and helps me express myself thoroughly with my words. Without these learning experiences I don’t know how I’d be able to function, but they have truly helped me to prevail to the level of knowledge that I am at today. I am very thankful for my teachers and parents for helping me acquire the skills of reading and writing that I have today, they play a very important role in my

Reading was one of my favorite things to do in my free time. My mother read to me and my sister regularly until we were in our early teens. Before bedtime we would curl up in bed with her as she read. It was something I looked forward to every night, a time of bonding with my mom and sister. She read with animation and changed voices for different characters, making the story come alive.…

I remember when my father bought me the Junie B. Jones book series by Barbara Park. I read those books over and over again; I had fallen in love with the whole collection, but I still enjoyed to write more than reading. I was one of the young girls that felt the need to write down everything that happened to me and keep it in a journal. Looking back, I am glad I did. Not only did it help create memories of my childhood, but it also tremendously improved my writing skills.…

My mother and my older brother loved to read. One memory of literacy involves spending time with my mother, reading The Little Ballerina by Dorothy Grinder. We would always sit at the end of my bed, and she would read that book to me every night. Just as my mother did, my grandmother would read The Little Ballerina…

I have had quite a journey with writing, and all of the experiences that I have had have led me to believe that I am an okay writer. The first memory that I have of writing something is from the first grade. Our teacher would have us write short stories about whatever we wanted to, and then she would bind them into little books. I mostly wrote about my stuffed animals going on adventures. I am so glad that our teacher did this- it made writing seem like an exciting activity that was accessible even in 1st grade.…

What did I have that they didn’t? I had practice writing and received more control of how to collect my ideas and organize them into a paper that allowed me to acquire worthy grades. To emphasize, I am able to collect my ideas faster due to the consistency of writing every week. This behavior has led to me to being able to manage my time more efficiently on ideas such as punctuation and even creating longer sentences that will improve my papers. Even though English 101 is a beginner writing class, it taught me how to apply those writing skills outside of the classroom walls, while helping me more than any of my other high school English classes.…

English has always been an easy subject for me as I truly enjoy reading and writing, for as long as I remember I have had a natural talent for English. The lowest grade I have ever received in an English class was a B at the very lowest. I believe my talent for reading and writing comes from my mother who has always been an avid reader and even read aloud while she was pregnant because she heard that it was good for me. While growing up, my parents took me to the library weekly to get books for myself as well as themselves. When I was old enough, she placed me in reading programs at the library to further my reading skills and to meet some other children before kindergarten.…

I still do all of my homework, including reading articles, book, and writing papers, but I do not read or write much in my free time. Even though literacy has grown on me, I still would much rather do math or play outside than read a book or write a paper. Even though I do not enjoy literacy, does not mean that I am going to show that in my classroom. In fact, because I grew up disliking reading and writing it has made me want to make English more fun for my future students. I think literacy can be taught in a more exciting way than I learned it when I was in elementary school.…
