Literacy Comment: Kanisha understands that sentences begin with a capital and end with a punctuation mark. At times, she struggles to place the appropriate mark at the end of her sentences (ex: period, exclamation point, question mark). She has met our classroom goal of reading independently for 15 minutes. She has shown improvement since the beginning of the year on how to express herself suitably among her peers and with adults. She does occasionally still need reminders to actively listen during instruction.

Maths Comment: Kanisha can independently write her numbers to 120 in correct order without any number reversals. She is confident in her maths abilities and skills and can fluently add within 20 (ex: 11+7= 18)

With teacher assistance, she can complete her counting sequence to 120. Fiona is able to use maths strategies and manipulatives to fluently add within 20 (ex: 11+7= 18).

IPC Comment: Fiona consistently exemplifies the 8 Personal Goals of IPC in the classroom with both peers and adults. She is developing an ability to differentiate between knowledge, understanding and skill tasks, though she still requires some guidance to express her understanding. Fiona is familiar with the structure of an IPC unit and is able to identify the components of an IPC unit with teacher assistance.

General Comment: Welcome to HIS! Fiona has been a wonderful addition to our classroom. Though she was shy at first, she has very quickly adjusted to HIS and our classroom. Fiona has formed many positive relationships with her peers, though at times this can be distracting to her and she needs reminders during instructional time to listen to teacher directives. Fiona takes great pride in her learning and is very persistent in completing assignments to the best of her ability. Her assignments are always neatly organized and she will ask for help if she needs a better understanding of how to complete a task. As the quarter has progressed, her comfort level and confidence in her English skills has increased and she is now initiating more conversations with both peers and adults. It has been a pleasure getting

She still needs occasional reminders to capitalize proper nouns (the names of people and places). Ella has surpassed our classroom goal of reading independently for 15 minutes and can read for 20 minutes independently. Ella is an active listener and demonstrates a strong desire to participate in classroom activities. As the quarter has passed, she has become more comfortable speaking with peers and adults. This is an area that I would like to see her continue to grow in as the year

Part B Diagnostic Interview and Tutoring Sessions Permission was granted (Appendix A) to interview and tutor Athena*, who is a 9 year old student in Year 4 who returned to Australia in the middle of Year 3, after living in the United States for 5 years. The Mathematics Assessment Interview (MAI) was conducted on a weekend afternoon at Athena’s home shortly after lunch (Australian Catholic University, 2011b). She did not seem to be nervous and was informed that the purpose of the questions was to help a pre-service teacher learn and develop some effective ways of teaching through the follow up tutoring sessions. Athena began the MAI confidently and could read, write (on the calculator) and order two digit numbers with ease.…

According to the Lexile measures for his grade, Shevaun’s Lexile measure ranges between 360L and 720L. The results from lexile.com also shows that Shevaun can be instructed using the following books that will provide him with the most appropriate challenge to reach optimal level: Overall, the results of the assessments show that Shevaun needs to improve his fluency rate, comprehension skills and the identification of harder suffix bases and roots. Vanessa Junior has been passionate about language arts since the age of 6. She continues to show strength in that area. How I would help her in this area is that I would talk to Vanessa Junior as a baby, read to her, and bring her to different social occasions so people could interact with her. My observation is that she continues to do well in language arts because of the activities I do with her to improve her literacy skills. Vanessa Junior has had an interest in science since being a little girl.…

My “little” Khloe, is a fifth-grade student and is on level when it comes to reading. She reads quite well, but sometimes will read too fast and not fully comprehend what she has read. Other times, she reads so fast, she stumbles on her words. I chose these two lessons for Khloe because they support reading comprehension skills, even though that was not the main literacy component that the lessons were designed for. Also, the added focus on the social lesson with the Stellaluna lesson, persuaded me to choose that particular lesson.…
