One of the counseling career choices that have really intrigued me is becoming a marriage and family counselor. This area is where I feel most drawn to and feel the most passion. I would like to become a therapist for a private practice and later on after building clientele, open my own practice. This kind of career requires an undergraduate, usually in counseling, psychology, or sociology, a Master’s degree in counseling, two years of post-graduate work that is supervised (2,000-4,000 hours worth), passing a state licensing exam and keeping up with requirements after attaining your license. It would be really hard for me to see my client go through withdrawals and have a relapse. I feel like it would be hard for me to relate to these types of clients because I really haven’t had an experience or gone through a life event that is similar to what these people are going through. It would be a hard for me to come to terms if one of my clients weren’t able to stay sober. I feel like it’s the best of both worlds. With individual supervision the supervisee doesn’t get, as much experience with a variety of clients and the perspective/feedback that they get can be limited. Meanwhile group supervision is great because there is an abundance of client and perspective diversity. The drawbacks to this are having a supervisor that may overlook you because they’re having to focus on many other students. Not getting the help/attention that is necessary can be detrimental the learning process. Also the more people in a group, the more likely it is that there could be more quarrels or opposing views that also don’t facilitate growth. In triadic supervision, the student gets more diversity in perspective and clients than individual supervision but doesn’t get the chaos that could potentially come with group supervision. I would like to have my supervisor be able to invested in my work and learning but still is able to have my own independence in the working field. I would also like to have the opportunity to hear others experiences and perspectives and be able to discuss different issues that may arise, but not be run down with so many conflicting
