Legalization of pot The attitudes of Americans towards marijuana (also known as pot or weed) have varied significantly from the time its use was illegalized in the 1930s to this day. Public opinion demand for the legalization of marijuana has steadily been rising since 1990, something that is greatly attributed to the media which played a huge role in liberating the masses. It’s generally accepted that the media knowingly shaped the attitudes of the general public towards marijuana as well as the marijuana laws. Many studies have been conducted that using general social survey data to dig into media exposure of weed and attitudes towards its legalization from the mid-70s through early 90s and lately 2012 to the present. Most findings indicate that whereas media exposure had little to do with attitudes about the legalization of pot from 1975 to 1990, both newspaper and television exposure had a significant influence in favoring marijuana legalization from 1991 through 2012.
