Introduction I currently work as a self-harm practitioner in a multidisciplinary community team which provides treatment for people who self-harm and have diagnoses of personality disorder. In my current role I have opportunities to work therapeutically with patients both on an individual basis and in groups. Coupled with knowledge of theoretical concepts and frameworks I feel that this has greatly increased my understanding of what it is to be a member of a work group. In groups we have to be aware of other people, we have to compromise and abandon our own egocentric needs in order to maintain our place in the group, but at the same time group membership…

Groups are an effective way for counselors to reach out and serve multiple people at one time effectively. It is an effective way for individuals to learn new skills and obtain information, find support from others, and learn from others who are going through similar experiences. In the future, I hope to improve my facilitation of the therapeutic process in groups by becoming more attuned to the rhythm and pacing of group…

My group session experience as a group member and leader/co-leader has taught me to be more reserved and pull back from my usual leadership role. The group sessions have taught me to be a better listener by building trust with other group members through the commonalities we share. Throughout the group work, we developed the four stages of the group: initial stage, transition stage, working stage, and final stage. The professor was the facilitator for the first few group sessions and I eventually had the opportunity to be the co-leader after observing my professor.…

Romanticized Reality: An Analysis of Pride and Prejudice’s Unrealistic Aspects and a Personal Reflection ‘Decades’ is a common theme used at parties, spirit days, and special events in the 21st century. Growing up, my elementary school days were always followed by a bag of popcorn and reruns of the popular 1950’s based Television show Happy Days. To this day, I ponder about how fantastic it would be to hear the click of red pumps approaching a jukebox on a late summer 50’s night. The group session I covered was the chapter on educational groups. The purpose of this session was to cover some material in the book in innovative, creative, and interesting ways. Most of the chapter covered stress management and avoiding burnout along with a smaller section on time management which can also contribute to stress. Since all of the members of the group are senior social work majors coming up on the end of the semester I figured going over stressors and stress management techniques was a good use of time for the group. I feel that checking in with members to see how they are currently feeling and how their weeks are going is pertinent information in leading the group.…

When I walked into this class, my first reaction to small groups was I needed to keep my emotions out as much as possible and learn to keep up boundaries. Emotions can get tricky when talking to other people about their problems. My focus on this program is to be a trauma therapist for kids. I believed that taking small groups would help me become a better professional in the field and now more than ever I can say I learned more in this class that I ever thought I would from a one semester class. Thinking about what small group’s entails I always pictured a circle with chairs, talking about a deep intimate topic that everyone is shy about.…
