James articulates, “The students, then, reach the easy conclusion that education equals memorize and then test” (148). Students are being taught specific information such as a date a war occurred. Most students only put this date in their short term memory until they finish taking a test. After the test is taken the information that was stored in the short term memory is most likely forgotten. In the education system, standardized testing is focused on. However no one is aware what will actually be on the test, other than those who made the exam. Due to this teachers are teaching subjects and material that are usually found on the tests. These subjects and material usually include, math, science, English, reading and writing. These subjects are taught over a longer period of time, allowing the students to retain and much information as they can. James writes, Test can be valuable in education” (146). These people usually do not do as well in school as those who do have a desire to get an education. Individuals can pass through school and not receive an education. The information being taught goes in one ear and out the other. Learning for these people would be harder. Conversely these people still learn, however they might not obtain an education. James states, “What students have been exposed to as education is an absence of education” (147). Some students need to be more engaged in order for then to have the desire to learn. The most intelligent person might not be learning or doing well in school. The reasoning behind this could be that they are not being engaged enough.
