In my years of employment, the ability to listen to the opinions and views of others has been a key factor in the grooming of a supervisor. Often times, people want to voice their grievances about others or policies that they are uncomfortable with, which prevents them from happily completing their job. Once you’ve listened to what they have to say, be supportive. Support, in a leadership role, can be displayed in many different ways. For example, having patience and showing empathy. Everybody who works with you is not always as dedicated or self-driven as you are. As a supervisor, your position commands respect from your coworkers and subordinates. In turn, you, as a supervisor, should also show them the same respect and take an interest in them as human beings. When employees are congratulated or thanked, they become more loyal and perform with consistence. If something doesn’t go right, never criticize or scold an employee in front of others. It should be done privately and with constructiveness. A leader should let their employees know that they too were once in their shoes and understand the challenges they are faced with on the job. Reassure them that you are on their side and are willing to step in to help when needed. If you are not needed, the skill of delegation should be put into place because it will allow you to better supervise your staff. Things get done through others under a successful supervisor. Delegation also allows you to free up time to focus on more important work that needs to be handled. It also supports the confidence and trust you have in those you supervise so that they may be able to learn and experience some of the things you would usually
