Probation and parole officers should have the specialized training and in-depth knowledge of social perceptiveness, active listening, complex problem solving, organization, judgement and decision making, and speaking. An officer should have a social understanding of everything going on because they are the ones that need to understand the client and make sure they understand them. The officers want to explain their client’s behavior and his/her personality to the situation in which they are acting. Active listening is an important trait to have when you are an officer because they want to communicate with their clients with understanding of what they said so they can give feedback that helps them the best it can and to confirm the understanding of both parties. Problem solving is very important because it could make a huge difference in their career. When they are at work they need to solve problems for their clients, they need to be able to define the issue, generating replacements, calculating and pick out substitutes and applying those solutions.
