Keeping the Death Penalty When people make a bad choice and get sent to jail they are only in there for a short period of time before going home. For some people they are in jail for a lifetime, and they get the death penalty. Some people do not think the death penalty should still be allowed because of its cruelty. The death penalty should remain as an acceptable punishment because it can be used as a deterrent for serious crimes, other criminals can learn from other death penalty recipients, and the death penalty is by far more humane than past executions forms. The death penalty can be used as a deterrent for serious crimes. “On April 24, 1996, President Clinton signed Public Law 104-132 into effect as the Antiterrorism and Effective Death Penalty Act of 1996 (AEDPA)” (Kappler). Also in 1996 it was one of the lowest murder rates while Clinton was President. Since then the murder rates have been decreasing consistently, and as of 2016 the murder rate is at 5.63. The death penalty used to be sentenced to criminals if they did murder, rape, etc. “The death penalty for rape was struck down 1977” (Dieter). They took it away from because they realised that at the time rape was not that common. So in 1977, they took it out and now they only get sentenced a long time in prison. We should keep the death penalty because it still does its job to get rid of the bad criminals that harmed other innocent people for no reason. The death penalty is not that bad when it really comes to thought it is scary to think of, but it is not that harmful. No one should lose a friend or family member to some guy for no reason. If they kill someone they should be killed too, but not everyone thinks that
