Opponents claim that by taking a stand a lot of suffering can happen. Chief Joseph, the leader of the Nez Perce people, fought against whites to keep their land. His people fought many battles for what they thought was right. In his speech “On Surrender,” he says “Our chiefs are killed. Looking Glass is dead, Tu-hul-hil-sote is dead. The old men are all dead.” Chief Joseph’s people fought against the whites and most of his people did not survive. Why should people take a stand on issues of justice in society if it can get them hurt? Nevertheless, opponents forget that the person can get hurt whether they stand up for the issues of society or if they just ignore the issues. In fact, if a person does stand up for issues of justice in society they do not have to do so with violence, they could just do so by using civil disobedience.
