Importance Of Justice In Antigone

Justice is very important in society and there are many different things that go into the idea of justice.There isn’t one simple thing that makes justice work, it takes a variety of different concepts to not only form a system for justice, but put it into action. While there are many examples of societies where rules are established and behavior and judgements are measured against those rules, there is still injustice. We, as humanity, need to continue to be aware of this and work to make the world more just by being courageous in expressing our opinions. In the play, Antigone, the main character, Antigone, goes against the king’s judgement because her personal belief and love for her brother gave her courage to defy that ruling. If there was an absence of justice the world would be completely chaotic and quite honestly there probably wouldn’t be a safe society to live in. Being a strong person and acting courageous eventually inspired her sister, Ismene, to trust her decision to seek justice for their brother. At the start of the play Ismene thought Antigone was crazy for trying to bring justice to Polyneices’ body and spirit after his death; however, once Antigone is taken before the king, Ismene can’t bear to lose her sister and be all alone so she goes to the king and says, “I did it. If she is with me now, I share the blame with her and will bear it also” (Sophocles p 42 657-658). Antigone’s leadership and courage allowed Ismene to trust her sister and follow her lead even if it would lead to death. Antigone expanded her leadership skills by insisting that Ismene had no part in the crime and that she didn’t need to die for something Antigone did. Antigone couldn’t bear to see her sister die alongside her when Ismene didn’t do anything
