One of the most important achievements of Jefferson’s presidency was the Louisiana Purchase. In 1803, Jefferson offered France $15 million dollars for about 828,000,000 square miles that stretched from the Mississippi River to the Rocky mountains and from the Mexican border to the Canadian border. That equals out to less than three cents an acre. This land deal created all or part of 15 of the states we have today. Jefferson also got Lewis and Clark to explore the new land, which led to finding a waterway that led from the Pacific Ocean to the Mississippi River.
