I have been interested in science since my early childhood and my passion and thirst for scientific knowledge and discovery has followed me into adulthood. In high school I discovered the incredible world of chemistry and how the field has impacted the world in areas ranging from medicine to energy. Due to my great interests in chemistry I decided to pursue a degree in the science, in hopes to one day become a research chemist. I enrolled in McNeese State University in 2013 and am currently in my junior year. During my stay at McNeese, I’ve managed to maintain an excellent academic standing while conducting scientific research outside the classroom. Science consists of both theory and experimentation, and for one to truly master this remarkable …show more content…
Throughout my undergraduate career I’ve been involved in different areas of research relating to chemistry and biology. I’ve worked with my professors and other students on various projects and have acquired skills that are critical for my future career. The research that I have done with my professors and peers has allowed me to experience the everyday life of a scientific researcher and both the joys and the struggles that researchers face. I gained much needed hand on experience and have witness the operation of various scientific instruments used by chemists to measure and or interpret data about various substances. While conducting my microbiology research I learned important laboratory techniques, such as the aseptic technique, which is used in both medical and research labs. I also learned different ways to conduct experiments in order to justify your results. Last semester when I did research with a group that wanted to analyze and quantify heavy metals in various species of rice and bean samples I was able to learn how to use microwave digestion to prepare the samples for analysis. In addition to the preparation of the samples I learned how the ICP-MS (Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectroscopy) detects and quantifies various metals in a given sample. Being able to learn these various techniques and having …show more content…
My previous research experience will allow me to be successful in your program. The tools that I have learned from my undergraduate research would not only prove valuable in this program but will also be extremely important in my future career as a researcher. I would be greatly honored to be chosen to join a research group in your program; I will use the knowledge gained from your program in graduate school and beyond. After I complete my bachelor’s degree in Chemistry I plan to pursue a PHD in a subfield of the science, such as organic chemistry. After I complete my PhD my dream would be to work for a company’s R&D department. I ultimately hope to work in drug discovery so that I can help develop new compounds that can be used to treat

During my sophomore year as an undergraduate at the University of South Carolina, I was accepted into the Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program. I do not exaggerate when I say that this program changed the entire course of my life: helping me to fully understand my interests, altering my professional goals, and providing me with a viable path for my passions. As a first generation student, I had very little knowledge about how to navigate the sphere of undergraduate education and in the same vein, I knew next to nothing about graduate school. Before McNair I was never aware of what graduate school could offer me and the program, and the people it connected me with, became my greatest source of support as I made the journey into pursuing my doctorate.…

For as long as I can remember, I have wanted to attend North Dakota State University. My dad and sister are NDSU alumni, so furthering my education where they did provides us with a unique bond. Additionally, not many of my relatives attended college, allowing me to see the difficulties in providing for oneself and family without a college degree. Although I know the next seven years are going to be challenging, extremely strenuous, and will push me to the edge of my comfort zone, the satisfaction of administering medical services to those who need them will make it worthwhile. Not only will I be able to care for others with a Pharm.…

As I careened along the course for my first ever practice, I was struck with how unusual it was for me to do something so daring. Usually very cautious, I had only been asked to join Buggy a week prior, and there I was, lying only a few inches off of the ground in a motorless buggy, with my hands in front of me to steer. Peering through the windshield with an assortment of protective gear, I watched the track zoom by at 25 miles per hour. Buggy is a sport unique to Carnegie Mellon University, where students from all majors join to build and compete buggies. Looking back, there are many parallels between my experience with the sport, and the development of my career aspirations.…
