Information Literacy Importance

Information literacy isn’t a commonly talked about subject, but its importance in today’s society is astronomical. It should be something every student is well aware of, and has in their skill set. However, right now it is not. Information literacy is a crucial skill for students working their way through college courses; so in order to provide students with the best shot of success, colleges should be providing resources to help improve this proficiently. There are many ways to accomplish this. Offering college students a course specifically designed to enhance this skill would be a great place to start. Students should also have databases readily available and be instructed on how to navigate them efficiently. Students also need to be made aware how to choose and properly credit what information that they find. Finally students need to be taught how to effectively communicate the information they find to make their points. A college course is a great resource to make available to students who want to make an effort to improve their information literacy. There are course offered like a Study Skills course at universities. College students need to know the difference between junk information and good creditable information. Teaching students how to evaluate the information that they find would be extremely beneficial. Students need to know how to compare publishers of the information they find to find creditable accurate information (Information). They need to be informed on where to look for the credentials of a website. The need to decide if the information they are evaluating is quality work, if it covers the topic well, and if it meets the assignment requirements
