Identity is like a bird’s choice of migrating to the south for the cold weather. It is someone’s opinions, claims, or choice on one’s personality, family, and culture. The bird or other animal flying to the south for the chillier weather made the choice to decided if it would stay near the cold and risk getting injured or hurt, or if the bird would fly to the south to the warmer, safer weather. This is an example of how one’s identity is created: through your environment, background, and status.
The first way one’s identity is created is by one’s background or culture. The way one was raised or the environment of one’s childhood can display one’s opinions and claims of how someone sees himself. An example of this is from Amy Tan’s “Fish Cheeks”,

The way one lives or the way people around someone lives shows how that person’s identity and how they choose to live their life. An example of this is in Guy De Maupassant’s “The Necklace”. In this story, it states “Nothing but faded wallpaper and dilapidated furniture. How it tortures me to live in such a squalor. Oh, my life is a mistake of destiny. Make it better!” and “How humiliating it would be to appear so shabby among the most elegant women of Paris.” Then, later on in the story, it says, “I am ashamed. I haven’t any jewelry. My husband means well, but he’s merely a clerk.” and Matilda regards Jeanne’s home. It is richly appointed, with beautiful tapestries and paintings.” (Maupassant 12, 13). Matilda is ashamed of the way she lives and wants to match what the wealthier people have. She does not want to be seen wearing penniless jewelry or coats, or living in a poverty-stricken house. Matilda desires to be seen as wealthy and prosperous as a way to gain attention. In Amy Tan’s “Fish Cheeks”, is states “Tofu, which looked like stacked wedges of rubbery white sponges.” and “My relatives licked the ends of their chopsticks and reached across the table, dipping them into the dozen or so plates of food.” (Tan 1) Amy and her family had Chinese traditions and had fun as a family.
