Introduction
Executive managers in nearly every industry encounter special event planning. “Special events revolve around a specific purpose for the company or client, such as introduction of a new product or celebration of reaching a company goal. They might be held to thank, recognize, and sell to the company’s clients or customers” (Institute for Career Research, 2005, p. 11). Many different techniques can be used to plan and host special events, and managers must be flexible in the methods they use in order to successfully host a special event based on the size of the special event. For example, a mega event like the Olympic Games require much more thorough planning methods than a smaller special event.

But a major aspect that of planning a special event that the eight executives mentioned, was communication with other executives. Being able to communicate with other executives is crucial to hosting a special event. No successful manager can host a special event on their own. This requires them to communicate with a variety of other executives to efficiently operate their special event. Companies often hire a professional special event planner to efficiently manage their special event. As the Institute for Career Research (2005) noted, “Planning special events requires not only organizational skills, but a sense of creativity, even artistry. Professionals in this job may work for a company or facility, even a special events center, or may work as a contractor for other companies and organizations, assisting them with special events” (Institute for Career Research, pg. 11). Executives must implement a variety of branding methods in order to successfully host an event. Executives must also use different social media sites to advertise, depending on the clientele they want attending their event. Not only do executives have to communicate with the public, they must also be able to communicate with other executives to host the event.
Conclusion and Recommendation
Flexibility is the key for successful managers to plan special events. Each special event hosted, even by the same organization, is going to require different techniques that the executives must use when they are planning and carrying out the event. These differences can be due to audience, venue, activity, and a variety of other factors. The most successful special events are managed by executives who demonstrate flexibility in their techniques. Executives believe that the best branding methods for special events are public advertising, social media, and a unique logo. Executives showed that the best social media site to use in order to advertise most special events and communicate with the public is Facebook. The executives stressed the importance of communicating with other executives and favored face to face communication, texting and calling, meetings, and emails. The executives that were interviewed recommended that organizations should be flexible in the types of special events they host,
