High School Journey

High school is a very unique chapter of life that allows people to grow and express themselves. People do this in many different ways such as taking prestigious classes, participating in clubs, sports, music groups, and a variety of other activities. I made the decision for myself to participate in sports throughout my high school journey and I could not be happier at the achievements we have made through teamwork over the past four years. High school sports have taught me to be dedicated, use strong communication skills, and rise to the occasion in leadership roles. Without high school athletics I do not believe I would be as well equipped for whatever I will face after high school. Everyone has goals to be the best at whatever passion they …show more content…
I know that sports has brought out the leader in me above all other organizations that I have been a part of. As a junior I would see soon see playing time on the court and start on the football field but before that I felt the need for our team to have a larger purpose larger than itself. I started a prayer ministry with our football team before every practice and game which truly unified our team in a new way. I earned a starting spot at left tackle where I would face new challenges at not only doing my part but helping to coach up underclassmen that would one day fill my role. Over the last two years I have had the opportunity to help lead a football team into two state title games and win one. This is one of my greatest milestones and I look back and think about my dumb decision to not play football my freshman year. I will always regret this decision but I will also always remember the hard work that I put in every day of practice to achieve all state honors as a three year player. I hope that the way I lead with my actions and words will help to bring continued success to Monroe City High for years to come. High school sports bring out the best and the worst of everyone. Playing Football, Basketball, Track and Field, and Baseball throughout school has promoted exponential growth in my life. Without sports I would not have learned the skills of dedication, communication, and leadership. I am going to carry all of these attributes throughout the rest of my life thanks to high school

I now do not have a problem speaking in front of people or leading a team to achieve a goal. It allowed me to be bold in myself and know that anything is possible if I set my mind to it. Along with that, it gave me self-appreciation; I am proud of my accomplishment, but I am also proud that my hard work paid off with a state championship. Sports allow you to be able to look back to the past and see that your hard work did not go to waste. Person High School has also helped me discover who I am as a young adult and establish better social skills through my involvement in their Varsity Soccer Team. My involvement taught me how to work with people outside my social group. Many times you don’t get to choose the person you will work a task with, or who you have to help, and sometimes that person isn’t someone you get along with. If a task is hard and undesirable, it doesn’t mean you give up; it means you should work hard to finish it with a positive attitude. Many people around the United States believe that high schools sports are a much needed activity for kids. On the other hand, some people argue that sports in America have too many conflicts with a kids life. In October 2013’s Atlantic cover article, “The Case Against High School Sports,” Amanda Ripley argues that American student-athletes became less educated while playing a certain sport. Low test scores and sports have no correlation to each other; American student-athletes gain many benefits from playing sports after school including increased test scores and lower dropout rates, decrease in risky behavior, and having a competitive attitude in everything they do. Amanda Ripley writes that many countries outperform the United States on international…

Imagine a world without high school sports. In this parallel world, thousands of students across the country would have already lost interest in school, dropped out, and would have little to no hope of getting out of their current economic circumstances. In this world, there would be no communities or students uniting together to support their local athletes on a Friday night. In this world, there would be no immense feelings of satisfaction and victory after a team’s hard work, endurance, and personal overcoming of weaknesses. In this world, there wouldn’t be many of the great opportunities and experiences that come from high school sports.…
