Importance Of Helena In Midsummer Night's Dream

Register to read the introduction… Helena is one of the most courageous characters in this entire story. Demetrius, the man that Helena loves is going into the woods searching for Hermia, the women he was supposed to marry. However, unluckily for him, she ran off with the man whom she loved, Lysander. When Demetrius ran away to find Hermia, Helena ran after him. What made this so dangerous is that Demetrius didn’t like Helena at all; in fact he rather loathed her. If Helena got into trouble with a wild beast or muggers, there was a good chance Demetrius wouldn’t help her. Even Demetrius said bad luck could come to her, alone with a man, out in the woods. In Act 2, Scene 1, Lines 227-228, “I’ll run from thee and hide me in the brakes, And leave thee to the mercy of wild beasts.” Demetrius says these words, basically saying that he will leave her to die at the hands of beast. Through these cruel words spoken by the one she loves, Helena continues on. Helena no matter what loved Demetrius. Might I say, that Demetrius didn’t show her any affection of any kind what so ever. At one point in their lives, Demetrius did like Helena, but as they both grew up, he started to have feelings for Hermia, Helena’s best friend. That would have been a severe confidence breaker. Yet Helena refused to give up. No matter what Demetrius said or did, she loved him as much as she ever did if not more. This kind of love shouldn’t be taken lightly, and used as an advantage but instead be received as a gift. I suppose Demetrius didn’t get that message.
