It is bizarre how many organizations, to include parents and teachers in America have fought to keep schools and colleges gun-free zones, but yet and still they have become the most common targets for mass shootings. In giving this topic a lot of thought from real life experiences seen in the news all around the world, it seems only right to conclude that it is because criminals or a person, who wants to do harm to others, whether out of revenge or to gain publicity, knows that this is the one place where no one will be armed. These people know that campuses are gun-free and that they cannot be stopped easily. Those even mentally disturbed know that school campuses are a place where they can quickly rack up a large body count; because it is a gun-free zone. A lot of the shooting incidents, to include the one at Virginia Tech in 2007, where a gunman killed several people in a matter of minutes, could have been prevented easily if only someone had someone had been carrying a gun. This gun would have allowed that person to defend themselves as well as others around them. The saddest part of this ordeal is that unlike the shootings at several other campuses, this shooter was done by someone who was not even a student attending school on the campus. He was the person we described above, showing that mentally challenged people and those with ill-intentions make their way to places such as school campuses to act out because they know there are not guns allowed. If an armed student or teacher is merely able to show or pull out a weapon to the perpetrator, it could very well cause that person to recoil or modify his plans. That person may run away out of fear of losing their own life as oppose to taking the life of one or more people. One armed teacher or adult student can make a big difference when seconds count most. In other states such as Nebraska, lawmakers have spent years working on making exclusions that prevents concealed guns on school grounds, in school-owned vehicles, or at school-sponsored events to include athletic events. These lawmakers thought that there was a need to be given to the right a person has to protect themselves anywhere. Such shooting tragedies as the Virginia Tech shooting, those which have happened since, but not mentioned shows clearly that each state needs responsible laws …show more content…
I believe that if just one student or teacher at Virginia Tech would have had a gun, there may have been less than 30 victims. It is not so far-fetched that in some cases the only way to stop people with guns is with like force. While this statement has been found to be controversial among advocates, it is a fact, sad to say, that concealed carry laws can actually save lives. Although one can never really protect against incidents such as these type of random shootings, being able to have a concealed weapon can and will save lives, if only one. Being allowed to carry a gun allows everyone on campus; teachers and students the opportunity to protect themselves. Good people obey the laws, being allowed to carry a gun only gives these people means to protect themselves from the ones who do
