Since the guidance counsellor in training is taught to think well, act well and feel well they inspire their students to do the same. As the students begin to adopt this way of living they begin to see themselves in a more positive light. This helps them in making better choices and preserving themselves against the many obstacles and challenges they face. In many socially challenged communities in Jamaica students outside of television often do not see many positive role models the guidance counsellor using his/her skill of self-reflection can become that positive figure in the lives of those students. Regardless of students’ social background they all want to feel valued. The guidance counsellor in applying his/her skills of effective communication, empathy, listening on multiple levels and problem-solving helps to make this possible. No one adult or child likes to talk to someone and feel they are not being heard and understood. The guidance counsellor when dealing with a student has been exposed to violence has to be able to show empathy. The student will then feel that yes this person gets what I am feeling and will want to open up and be willing to accept
