Importance Of Growing Up In Hawai

Decent Essays
Growing up in Hawai’I you have a strong connection to nature. I grew up in Kahalu’u and I was surrounded by mountains and the ocean. Everything was so close and you can’t grow up in a place like that without being curious about everything. I spent most of my time hiking, going to the beach, and playing in streams near my house. I loved being in tune and close with nature. So, in elementary school I was a part of the PUEO program and took a sustainability class and was fascinated by all the things we can do to help conserve the parts of the island we need the most. I also took a marine biology class and learned so much about the ocean and thought that if I combined what I learned about sustainability and the ocean I could one day save the ocean.

Tonight, we honour one of our nation’s youngest, yet extremely accomplished environmental activists. Severn Cullis-Suzuki has shown an interest in the environment and its preservation from an early age on, as she explored the nature surrounding Vancouver together with her father, famous environmentalist David Suzuki. She founded the Environmental Children’s organization at age 9, still in Elementary School. By age 12, she had become so invested in environmental activism that she was invited to speak before the members of the 1992 Rio Earth Summit, reminding them that the issues they were addressing had implications for every living being on the planet. She emphasized one of her firm believes, that of sustainable development, crafting long-term…

How ranching is not just about making money to survive anymore, but also a way to help preserve their land and the land of those around them. For too long the Federal Government has taken away from the rancher’s livelihood, putting restrictions on how many cattle they are allowed to have, where they are allowed to graze, and taking away their right to controlled grass fires. Courtney White has news for everyone. Today, with the help of non-profit organizations, ranchers who are willing to make changes, and yes, the Federal Government, ranchers are now starting to see improvements in not only the number of cattle they can have,…

Today 's current society is filled with individuals that exploit the environment. This focus on industrial actions creates a society that is separates nature from humans. With this separation, it is always incredibly satisfying to be involved with groups that are so dedicated to conserving lands for species to use. The project that I was so fortunate to work with was the MPG Ranch. This project allowed me to experience the actions of conservationists from a firsthand perspective in order to see for myself the value of humans with the environment.…

In addition, the “chain of explanation” is a model that was created to characterize a technique used in the studies of political ecology by Blaikie and Brookfield (EVSP620, 2016). An example of a conceptual framework that exemplifies a link between ecological changes and political-economic forces are displayed in Figure I (Scoones, 1998). Figure I displays the relationship between livelihood, organizations/institutions, and sustainability. The model is used to derive five types of analyses. The first analysis that can be derived from this model is the contextual analysis of trends, conditions, and assessment of policy setting in terms of social differentiation, demography, Argo-ecology, climate, terms of trade, macro-economic conditions, politics,…

Marine biology has always been a passion of mine ever since I first heard about it when I was four years old. My family has a deep-running connection to the ocean so when they realized how interested I was in science, they suggested marine biology. I loved the concept of studying unknown creatures that sit miles below the surface of our planet that no human has ever seen. I’ve read many textbooks and field guides over the years, which started as an amusing pastime. However, the more I read, the more I became completely and utterly engrossed in the subject which eventually shaped me into what I am today.…
